The College is actively assessing its long-term campus safety model, including internal staffing and potential partnerships with external law enforcement agencies. This recruitment is being conducted to ensure readiness to meet operational needs. Employment decisions are contingent upon final institutional direction, and positions may be modified, delayed, or not filled.

  • Hours of Work: Swing shift - 4pm - 12am. Night shift - 12am - 8am. 
  • Screening will begin ASAP and continue until the position is filled.
  • Start date to be determined, but as soon as practicable after the hiring/interview process.

Salary and Benefits: This is a full-time, benefited Staff, S30 level position. Starting salary range: $24.08 - $29.50/hourly, depending upon experience.

JOB SUMMARY:


The Campus Safety Officer is a full-time, benefited, position that maintains the safety and security of people and property on the college campus for 24 hours per day, 365 days a year.  The officer will patrol (on foot or by vehicle) the campus, buildings, parking lots; they will provide escorts for visitors, students, and employees; they will watch for emergency situations, suspicious activity, and campus policy and procedure violations; and they will prepare reports and logs.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: – this position is non-exempt and is eligible for compensatory or overtime pay provisions of the FLSA.

Ensure a safe and secure campus by monitoring the campus and parking lots for suspicious activity, safety hazards, and campus policy and procedure violations.
  • Patrols campus areas to ensure security, secures campus entry and exit points, and monitors for suspicious activities. 
  • Patrols and/or monitors parking areas to provide security, safeguard campus property, and prevent loss 
Maintain a safe, orderly, and healthy campus environment by responding promptly to incidents, offering assistance and intervention when necessary to maintain peace and order; and securing and opening the campus for the beginning and ending of the day.
  • Performs periodic checks of fire extinguishers and ensures classroom safety tubs are stocked appropriately. 
  • Secures all campus areas and locks all exterior doors at the conclusion of campus evening hours. 
Foster a unified approach to campus safety by maintaining clear and effective communication with campus safety team members, supervisors, and coordinating closely with law enforcement or other emergency responders to facilitate swift responses to incidents and promote collaborative problem-solving.
  • Collaborates with local law enforcement to ensure officers and first responders are familiar with the campus and its layout to ensure that effective emergency response plans are established. 
Support accountability and continuous improvement efforts within the organization by documenting activities by providing accurate record-keeping and routine reports and investigating safety incidents.
Other responsibilities may be assigned based on contemporary institutional needs.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS:
  • There may be occurrences of interacting with employees and/or students, past employees and/or students, members of the general public, and others who express opinions, may exhibit strong emotions, which will require the employee to interact professionally, diplomatically, and appropriately in such situations
  • While performing the essential duties of this position, an employee would frequently be required to move around the assigned work areas as well as within hallways, meeting rooms, and other parts of the campus facilities
  • There may be multiple/daily instances of prolonged sitting, standing, and personal computer use, which would include keyboard and/or mouse usage as well as viewing a computer monitor
  • An employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus
  • The overall work environment requires the mental ability to shift focal point quickly due to interruptions; an employee must be able to mentally track multiple projects and tasking as well

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Associate degree in Criminal Justice or related field from an accredited college or university OR 2 years law enforcement/security experience will be accepted in lieu of education for which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved. 
  • Two years of experience in law enforcement, customer service, or security role working in a diverse, multicultural community. 
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to be insured by the College’s insurance provider. 
  • Basic First aid/CPR/AED/Blood Borne Pathogens certifications or ability to obtain certifications within the first two months of employment. 
*In lieu of the required degree, candidates with equivalent professional experience, industry certifications, or a combination of education and relevant work experience may be considered. 
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice or related field of study from an accredited college or university. 
  • 5 years of experience in a law enforcement, customer service, or security role working in a diverse, multicultural community.
