The Classroom Aide/Substitute Teacher is a part time position.  This position helps to maintain ratios and cover leave for teaching staff.  The Classroom Aide/Substitute Teacher supports the teaching teams in providing a high-quality educational experience that promotes the holistic development of children.  This role assists with classroom management, child supervision, and daily routines to foster children’s physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development. 

Compensation: $13.33/hr. 

Priority Screening Date: Position is open until filled.

Starting Date: As soon as practical after the hiring process. 


Essential Functions: – this position is non-exempt, i.e., is eligible for compensatory or overtime pay provisions of the FLSA.  This listing of essential duties is not all-inclusive, but representative; other duties may be assigned).

Assists with maintaining active supervision to ensure the safety and well-being of children by providing constant oversight in all settings.
  • Conducting head counts regularly and frequently, especially when changing locations.
  • Positioning self for optimal visibility, in strategic locations to maintain sightlines and cover all areas of the classroom or playground.
  • Actively engaging with children, maintaining proximity to monitor behavior.
  • Responding to incidents, accidents, and other safety concerns.
  • Reinforce the safety rules, expectations, and boundaries the children have been taught.
Aids in supporting children’s development and needs by helping the teachers with classroom operations and maintaining health and safety protocols.
  • Helping children with hygiene routines such as handwashing, toileting, and meal/snack times.
  • Help to prepare and organize learning materials to support lesson plans.
  • Assist in setting up and cleaning up classroom activities and maintaining a clean environment.
  • Follow daily schedules and transitions smoothly to help maintain classroom structure.
  • Openly communicate any safety concerns, injuries, or behavioral issues to the teaching team and/or administrators.
Assist the teaching teams to support positive behavior guidance.
  • Support children in developing self-regulation and problem-solving skills through positive reinforcement strategies.
  • Assist in implementing consistent classroom expectations and behavior management techniques.
  • Model empathy, patience, and respectful communication in all interactions.

Other tasks may be assigned based on contemporary institutional needs.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS: 
  • Comply with highly inflexible deadlines; there will be multiple occurrences of sudden, urgent task completion required
  • Adapt to a variable work schedule; including night shifts, evenings and weekends as needed
  • Frequently move around the assigned work areas as well as within hallways, meeting rooms, and other parts of the campus facilities
  • Engage in multiple/daily instances of prolonged sitting, standing, bending, kneeling, twisting, climbing and carrying of objects
  • Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds; a team lift technique is required for lifts exceeding 50 pounds
  • Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus
  • Ability to read and interpret building and shift schedules, directions for equipment, hazardous material labels, Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and chemical labels
  • Frequent and prolonged use/exposure to cleaning chemicals, exposure to dust, and potential exposure to bodily fluids and blood borne pathogens; Personal Protective Equipment and safety procedures must be utilized as required
  • Able to function in an environment with substantial latex and/or nitrile material exposure and without an allergic reaction
  • The overall work environment requires the mental ability to shift focal point quickly due to interruptions; an employee must be able to mentally track multiple projects and tasking as well
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate; however, there may be unexpected instances of somewhat loud sounds
  • Ability to effectively listen and perceive the nature of sounds and spoken words at normal speaking levels with or without correction

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent education
  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Ability to pass a successful background check
  • Ability to become first aid and CPR certified

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Child Development Associate (CDA)
