JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: Insurance Defense-Medical Malpractice Legal Assistant FLSA: Non-Exempt; Hourly
DEPARTMENT: Litigation STATUS: Full-time; On-site
This position shall perform various substantive legal duties under the supervision of the attorneys in the Medical Malpractice Litigation group.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Maintain attorney(s) calendars.
- Schedule all appointments for attorneys, paralegals, etc.
- Evaluate all pleadings for deadlines.
- Transcribing of dictation.
- Prepare correspondence, pleadings, and memorandums.
- E-filing in state and federal courts.
- Communicate with clients, court officials, and third parties regarding case matters.
- Filing and maintaining of files (hard copy and electronic).
- Print documents from electronic e-filings.
- Associate documents to document management system.
- Index pleading and discovery files.
- Evaluate documents to maintain or cull for closing files.
- Billing (entry of attorney time and audit prebills).
- Pay vendor invoices.
- Issue checks for reimbursement of travel expenses.
- Perform other duties as required.
Qualifications and Skills Requirement
- Must have a high school diploma or GED.
- A minimum of 3 years experience in litigation-insurance defense; medical malpractice preferred.
- Medical experience and familiarity with medical terms.
- Must have a high level of computer literacy including proficiency in MS Office Suite.
- Experience using legal time and billing system.
- Excellent time management, organizational abilities and strong proofreading skills are also required.
