Job Title: Adult Shelter Overnight Staff
Salary Range: $25.50 an hour
Position Type: Part-time/Full-time
Location: Hyde Park
Reports to: Shelter Manager and Overnight Lead
Hours: Shifts are either 9pm to 7am, or 10pm to 8am, every day of the week.
Position Overview
Overnight Staff help maintain a safe and peaceful environment for those experiencing homelessness and residing at our shelter. This is a sleeping position with duties and responsibilities before and after going to sleep. Overnight Staff are responsible for ensuring that guests adhere to the guidelines established like curfew, quiet time, and staying safe in shelter overnight. Overnight staff must be able to wake up and tend to emergencies or events that may occur overnight as needed.
Responsibilities:
- Follow night and morning routines like reminding guests of curfew and quiet time, opening the kitchen and helping guests get ready for the day.
- Maintaining a safe environment for the guests to rest. If situations arise that need attention, knowing to call on-call staff and any other resources appropriate for the situation.
- Log into LCH communication log after every shift.
- Attend LCH staff meetings.
- Attend relevant training opportunities as assigned by the Executive Director.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding our guests.
- Be able to wake up and tend to situations if they occur in the middle of the night.
- Use google drive documents to log communications, shelter stays, report incidents, and other relevant information.
- Use a restorative approach when talking to guests about behavioral issues.
- Help maintain cleanliness of the house and make sure that all supplies are stocked.
Skills and Abilities Desired
- Ability to represent LCH and create and maintain positive relationships in the community.
- Strong word processing, internet, and organizational skills.
- Preference for experience working with vulnerable populations.
- Ability to follow and enforce policies and procedures.
- Ability to rapidly assess and evaluate situations.
- Ability to provide compassionate support and guidance to a diversity of people.
- Ethical and possessing personal integrity.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team; ability to create a working team dynamic.
- Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of guests.
- Ability to set and maintain professional boundaries with guests.
- Ability to lift 40 lbs.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or two years of experience in human services, social work, non-profit, or related field preferred.
- Ability to work independently as well as with a team.
- Ability to employ independent problem-solving strategies in rapidly changing situations.
- Understanding of systemic and generational poverty, substance misuse disorders, mental health disorders and their impact on those experiencing homelessness.
