Job Title: School Crossing Guard

Reports To: Director of Public Safety

Receives Guidance From: Director and/or Assistant Director of Public Safety, Principal, or Assistant Principal

Overtime Status: Compliant with position, salary, and FLSA regulations

Job Purpose

The Crossing Guard, Under general supervision, this part time/seasonal position provides a safe crossing for school children going to and from school each day that school is in session. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Duties And Responsibilities

  • Directs traffic in the morning and afternoon each day
  • Directs school traffic and helps children arrive and leave school safely.
  • Stops traffic at designated school crossings to allow children to cross the street safely
  • Ensures the children cross safely behind the guard using the cross walk
  • Assures the children are waiting safely away from the roadway
  • Observes children waiting to cross the street
  • Enters the street before any children while placing arms out.
  • While the traffic is stopped and the children are crossing the street, stands with outstretched arms making sure all traffic is stopped after children are completely across the street and out of danger
  • Watches for suspicious behavior of motorists or adult pedestrians
  • Provides safety guidance to children using the crossing.
  • Reports unsafe/suspicious activity to the Police Department.
  • Works approximately 10 hours a week during the school year.
  • Moves traffic signs if necessary (“One Way”; “Do Not Enter”)
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor
  • Report all accidents
  • Notify the Director of Public Safety of lateness in meeting assigned schedule
  • Participate in semi-annual safety and procedures training
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the Public Safety Director
  • Such additional health and age requirements as the Board may require
  • Satisfactory Participation in Random Testing
  • Ability to complete basic written reports
  • Ability to follow written instructions
  • Lead and attend staff meetings/trainings as applicable; serve on staff committees
  • Assume responsibility for own professional growth and development, for keeping current with literature, new research findings, for attending appropriate professional meetings and conferences, and to maintain any credits and/or continued education for maintenance of licensure/qualifications required for the position
  • Maintain and accept responsibility for any district owned fixed asset item assigned to employee and ensure appropriate use by following district policies for acceptable use
  • Undergo periodic evaluations according to state and board policy procedures
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Regular, dependable, in person attendance is an essential function of this position
  • Perform such other and not specifically enumerated duties as may be requested by the Board of Education, superintendent, administrator, director or established by district policy
  • Read, understand, and abide by Employee Conduct Policy, all other district, state and federal policies, and procedures and protocols as established by LCSD and the Mississippi Educator Code of Conduct

Qualifications:

  • Education Level: High School Diploma

Other Requirements:

  • Must be legally eligible to work in the United States.
  • Must be 21 years of age or older at time of employment.
  • Must have a driver’s license.
  • Must pass a drug test and background investigation.
  • Must be in good general physical condition.
  • Must be at the assigned duty location on time, which may vary from time to time.
  • Must have good eyesight or correctible to 20/20 vision.
  • Must have the ability to learn traffic control and vehicular direction.
  • Must have the ability to keep calm under pressure.
  • Must use sound common sense judgment in dealing with the public, parents and children
  • Works approximately 10 hours a week during the school year.
  • This position does not qualify for benefits.
  • Directs school traffic and helps children arrive and leave school safely.
  • Crossing Guards are responsible for making sure the children are safe entering and leaving school grounds.
  • Knowledge of school crossing safety concerns.
  • Knowledge of traffic patterns and volume during school days.
  • Knowledge of actions that are often considered to be suspicious behavior on the part of pedestrians in the school crossing area.
  • Knowledge of children’s habits and motions while waiting for permission to cross the street.
  • Skill in maintaining order and control at school crossings.
  • Skill in interacting well with children.
  • Skill in observation and identification of pedestrian traffic.

Physical Demands:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to perform the essential functions of this job successfully. The requirements include abiding by all health requirements set forth for school crossing guards. Work involves moderate physical effort standing and walking at a crosswalk and moving or carrying cones or signage. Performs work in outdoor conditions which includes exposure to heat, cold, adverse weather, traffic, loud noises, fumes, and moving objects. Requires the ability to see, hear, move and maneuver quickly in order to cross pedestrians safely and avoid danger from errant vehicles. Requires flexibility in work locations based on the needs of the Police Department. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, reach, crouch or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.

The work environment is not a standard office setting; but rather encompasses the entire active school campus both inside and outside the facilities. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and occasionally high.
