Position Summary

Under the direction of a Captain or other designated supervisor, the Firefighter performs fire suppression, emergency medical services, rescue operations, hazardous materials response, public education, fire prevention activities, station maintenance, and related emergency and non-emergency duties. Firefighters are expected to protect life, property, and the environment while maintaining the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and customer service.

Essential Functions

  • The following duties are intended to describe the general nature and level of work performed. They are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all responsibilities.
  • Respond to emergency incidents including fires, medical emergencies, motor vehicle accidents, technical rescues, hazardous materials incidents, and natural disasters.
  • Perform fire suppression activities utilizing established firefighting techniques and department standard operating guidelines.
  • Provide emergency medical care within the scope of certification and departmental protocols.
  • Participate in rescue operations including vehicle extrication, rope rescue, water rescue, and other specialized rescue disciplines as assigned.
  • Operate fire apparatus, ambulances, and department vehicles as authorized.
  • Inspect, clean, maintain, and test apparatus, equipment, tools, and protective equipment.
  • Conduct station maintenance, housekeeping, and routine facility upkeep.
  • Participate in daily training, drills, continuing education, and certification requirements.
  • Assist with fire prevention, inspections, public education, and community outreach programs.
  • Prepare reports and documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Maintain confidentiality of protected health information and other sensitive information.
  • Work effectively with fellow employees, allied agencies, volunteers, and the public.
  • Comply with all department policies, procedures, and safety regulations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Georgia Firefighter Certification or ability to obtain within department-established timeframes.
  • Georgia EMT or Paramedic certification required.
  • Valid Georgia Driver's License.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain certifications required by the department.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of firefighting principles and emergency medical care.
  • Ability to safely operate emergency vehicles and equipment.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to function effectively in stressful and hazardous environments.
  • Ability to work cooperatively as part of a team. Ability to exercise sound judgment and independent decision-making during emergency
  • operations.
  • Commitment to continuous professional development.

Physical Requirements

Must be capable of performing strenuous physical activity while wearing personal protective equipment and self-contained breathing apparatus, including lifting, carrying, climbing, crawling, kneeling, reaching, pulling, pushing, operating equipment, and working in extreme environmental conditions.

Work Environment

Work is performed in fire stations, emergency scenes, training environments, healthcare facilities, and various outdoor settings under potentially hazardous conditions, including exposure to smoke, fire, bloodborne pathogens, hazardous materials, extreme temperatures, and adverse weather.
