Description: A Student Support Paraprofessional Class 3 (Special Education) directly assists student and staff with instructional activities, skill acquisition, and the student support as needed in and out of the classroom. This position directly supports students with special needs academically and/or behaviorally.
Duties:
❖ Work with the classroom teacher according to lesson plans and routines set up by the teacher, student support team, and/or building principal
❖ Assist student(s) in academic areas and/or behavior plans
❖ Maintain records as indicated by the administrator
❖ Supervise student(s) during lunch and recess periods (at elementary levels)
❖ Provide appropriate supervision and assistance for student(s) with meal, self care, and/or bathroom times as needed per the student’s educational plan
❖ Communicate effectively and professionally with students and staff.
❖ Develop and maintain positive and appropriate relationships with students and staff.
❖ Attend professional development days as required
Qualifications:
❖ Must meet qualifications for paraprofessionals. This requires one of the following:
➢ Complete at least two years of study at an accredited institution or higher education(equal to 60 semester hours) OR
➢ Obtain as associate degree (or higher) from an accredited institution OR
➢ Meet a rigorous standard of quality and demonstrate, through passage of an approved formal state academic assessment. See specific requirements below*
❖ Must have motivation to work with students with disabilities and/or behaviors
❖ Ability to learn disability related information presented and to follow the direction(s) of the student’s support team
❖ Ability to take direction and feedback from certified staff to implement student plans.
❖ Ability to handle complex and stressful situations and issues with sound judgment, common sense, and in a calm manner
❖ Require minimal supervision
❖ Ability to function effectively and collaborate regularly as a member of an instructional team
❖ An EXCELLENT work attendance record and work habits are required.
❖ Ability to use age appropriate tones and language with students including those with special needs
❖ Must be able to treat all student information as confidential
Location: Lakewood Elementary School
Salary/Benefits: Per Lakewood Education Support Personnel Association (LESPA) Master Agreement
Hours: 6.5 hours/day Monday - Friday when students are in session with a 30 minute unpaid lunch 8:57 AM – 3:45 PM
