Job Summary

The Network Technician I plays a key role in supporting the deployment, installation, and maintenance of network infrastructure across all Lake-Sumter State College campuses. Working under the guidance of the Network Analyst I and reporting to the Director of Technology Infrastructure, this entry-level position is responsible for configuring and installing network switches, wireless access points, VoIP phones, emergency IP speakers, Blue Light phones, and outdoor wireless equipment such as Ubiquiti antennas. Additional duties include organizing telecommunications closets and coordinating with service providers during outages and scheduled maintenance.

This is a full-time, on-site position based across Lake-Sumter State College campuses. Travel between campuses, flexible scheduling.

This position serves as a foundational role with potential career progression to Network Technician II or Network Analyst I, based on demonstrated competencies and institutional needs, and can be reviewed after a year in the role and a positive evaluation. Lake-Sumter State College supports ongoing education in network technologies and provides financial assistance for relevant training programs, and will pay for relevant test certifications.

Responsible for demonstrating LSSC’s core values of Caring, Communicating, Collaborating, and Celebrating when interacting with students, employees, visitors, and community members.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Install, configure, and label network switches, wireless access points, VoIP phones, emergency IP speakers, Blue Light phones, and outdoor wireless gear in adherence to LSSC’s Cable Guidelines
  • Perform physical cleanup, organization, and documentation of telecommunications closets
  • Assist with cable management, patch panel labeling, rack installations, and structured cabling standards
  • Support network deployments and upgrades under the guidance of Network Analyst I
  • Drive between campuses to perform installations, maintenance, and troubleshooting
  • Maintain inventory of networking hardware, cabling supplies, and consumables
  • Provide basic troubleshooting for connectivity issues and escalate complex problems
  • Document installation procedures, update network diagrams, and maintain labeling standards
  • Collaborate with telecommunications service providers during outages, installations, and service restorations
  • Assist with after-hours maintenance, emergency response, and scheduled downtime events
  • Maintain a professional and customer-focused approach to service delivery
  • Adhere to safety protocols and College policies during all fieldwork
  • Participate in the College’s 24x7 support model, providing after-hours assistance as needed to ensure continuous network availability and rapid incident response
  • Maintain and expand knowledge of network technologies through continuing education.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

  • Basic understanding of networking protocols (TCP/IP, DHCP, DNS) and structured cabling standards (TIA/EIA)

Minimum Qualifications & Education

  • Required:
    • High school diploma or GED
    • In lieu of a degree, additional recent experience (within the past 3–5 years) may be considered: experience in facilities, audiovisual systems, or telecom support may also be considered.
    • Minimum of one (1) year of experience in IT support, structured cabling, or network installation.
    • Evidence working with basic networking concepts, hardware installation practices, and troubleshooting techniques
  • Preferred:
    • Associate degree in Information Technology, Networking, or related field.
