What You Will Do

As a Public Safety Telecommunicator, you will:

• Answer emergency, nonemergency and administrative calls
• Quickly gather accurate information from callers
• Provide lifesaving instructions using established emergency dispatch protocols
• Dispatch law enforcement, fire and emergency medical personnel
• Monitor radio communications and support responders in the field
• Enter and update incident information in the Computer Aided Dispatch system
• Track the location and status of public safety personnel and equipment
• Access and maintain sensitive law enforcement records through IDACS
• Remain aware of activity throughout the Communications Center and assist coworkers when needed

The work is fast paced and requires the ability to manage several responsibilities at once while remaining calm, accurate and professional.

Who We Are Looking For

Successful Public Safety Telecommunicators are dependable, composed and committed to helping others. They communicate clearly, listen carefully, pay close attention to detail and make sound decisions during stressful situations.
Previous public safety dispatching experience is helpful, but it is not required. Experience in customer service, communications or another fast paced environment can provide a strong foundation for this career.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must:

• Be a United States citizen
• Be at least 18 years of age
• Possess a high school diploma or GED
• Type at least 35 words per minute
• Successfully complete a background investigation
• Meet applicable criminal history requirements
• Be able to obtain required certifications, including IDACS, CPR, Emergency Medical Dispatch, Emergency Fire Dispatch and Emergency Police Dispatch
• Be available to work varied shifts, weekends, holidays, overtime and extended hours when required

• The ability to learn Lake County streets, communities, landmarks and mapping systems
• The ability to learn public safety radio, telephone, CAD and information systems
• Sound judgment and the ability to make timely decisions
• Professionalism when working with callers, responders, government officials and coworkers
• The ability to protect confidential and sensitive information

Work Environment

Public Safety Telecommunicators work in a professional Communications Center and spend extended periods seated at a workstation using multiple computer systems, radio equipment and telephone technology. The position requires close vision, color recognition, sustained concentration and the ability to perform effectively during stressful or rapidly changing situations.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $23.00 - $29.50 per hour

Expected hours: No less than 40.0 per week
