ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES AND OBJECTIVES:
The Academic Advisor for Student Athletes provides comprehensive, preemptive academic advising and student success support for all student athletes interested in pursuing degree programs at Lackawanna College. This position provides expertise to new and continuing student athletes in such functions as developing academic plans, identifying and supporting at risk student athletes, and collaborating with faculty, staff, and athletics to advance student retention, progression, and completion. The Academic Advisor for Student Athletes is expected to exercise independent judgment while working across diverse populations of student athletes on their academic and athletic journey. The position will work out of the Scranton office and may require occasional evening and/or weekend availability.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:- Strong interpersonal skills with students, faculty, and staff.
- Ability to relate to diverse population groups and effectively interact with a variety of constituents (e.g., students, coaches, parents, instructors) in both individual and group settings.
- Understanding of student development and strategies to motivate students to achieve their academic goals and ability to support students in managing emotions constructively in academic environments.
- Good organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and multitask responsibilities.
- Proficient computer skills and ability to learn database programs.
- Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to collaborate with coaches and instructors to support student-athlete academic success to promote healthy, productive relationships along faculty and student athletes.
- Proven initiative and problem-solving skills.
- Commitment to fulfillment of the College mission.
- Bachelor’s degree required in education, student development, or related field preferred.
- Advising experience in higher education or experience working with at-risk student populations.
- Prior experience working with student athletes preferred.
- Documented experience with database and LMS programs, and ability to work collaboratively with others to achieve a common goal.
