La Salle Academy is a Catholic, coeducational, college preparatory school, sponsored by the Brothers of the Christian Schools (the De La Salle Christian Brothers) offering a comprehensive curriculum. Founded in 1871 and located in the heart of Providence, La Salle Academy serves a student body of 1560 students in grades 6 through 12. La Salle Academy’s School Counseling Department seeks to promote the personal growth of each individual student and to provide them with the strategies necessary for positive educational, career, and social development. As such, our staff is dedicated to helping every student succeed academically, socially, and emotionally throughout their high school years and preparing them for life after graduation.
La Salle Academy is seeking a passionate and dynamic School Counselor to join our Counselling Department. The primary responsibility of the School Counselor will be to aid in the support and development of freshmen and sophomores as they transition into high school. We are looking for individuals that are passionate about educational access, excited to work relentlessly and creatively with students and the challenges they may face, and are able to form strong relationships with a wide range of constituents, including, but not limited to, parents, students, staff, and administration.
Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with the Director of School and College Counseling to implement the school's group counseling program to freshmen and sophomore students.
- Coordinate efforts with the Freshman Class Dean to provide a positive transition to high school life academically, socially, and emotionally.
- Work with the Director of School Counseling to prepare students for standardized testing programs: PSAT 8/9 and PSAT/NMSQT.
- Learn to use Scoir to aid students in using the various portals and in preparation for career and college exploration.
- Work with students and families when concerns arise in the academic, social, and/or emotional arenas.
- Work to facilitate conversations with students, parents, and teachers to support the needs of students on caseload.
- Communicate with teachers any accommodations documented through a La Salle Accommodation Plan.
- Counsel students that are in need of academic and emotional support; make appropriate referrals to outside agencies (when necessary).
- Collaborate with the Director of School and College Counseling to facilitate a smooth transition to a College Counselor for junior and senior year.
- Maintain confidentiality of records.
- Responsible for other assigned duties.
Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Education, Special Education, School Psychology, or a related field (required).
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in school counseling, academic support, learning services, or special education.
- Strong knowledge of neurodiversity, learning differences, and evidence-based intervention strategies.
- Ability to initiate, plan, and execute concurrent, deadline-driven projects from beginning to end with attention to detail.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including strong public speaking skills.
- Capability to work with highly competitive students/families in all areas of counseling.
- Willing learner, and is prepared for professional development opportunities.
- Familiarity with Blackbaud, Google Workspace, and related student information systems preferred.
