The job of Lead Maintenance Worker was established for the purpose/s of providing technical supervision and direction of Skilled Maintenance Workers within area of skill expertise (plumbing, mechanical/HVAC, electrical/electronics, general maintenance) and performing within area of journeyman trade skilled maintenance to resolve immediate operational and/or safety concerns that may include installing, repairing, and/or building items; identifying repair and/or replacement needs; assisting other skilled trades in completing projects safely and within established budget and time constraints; ensuring adequate materials are available to complete assignments in a timely manner; and using trade expertise in maintaining facilities for students, staff and public in safe operating condition.
This job is distinguished from similar jobs by the following characteristics: this classification includes lead positions within specific journey level trades including HVAC, Plumbing, Electrical/Electronics and General Maintenance. The positions report to Maintenance Supervisor or Director, Maintenance, Operations and Facilities and oversees Skilled Maintenance Workers.
An examination will be given to establish an eligibility list for the position of Lead Maintenance Worker in order to fill current and future vacancies. The eligibility list will be valid for 6 months. These positions are full-time, 40 hours per week, 260 paid days per year.

Equivalency:Any combination of training and experience equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade, with at least five years of verifiable journey level experience, dependent on skill(s), in a minimum of one of the following trades: plumbing, electrical, HVAC including repair, maintenance, and installation of air conditioning/heating, and refrigeration equipment; and experience in supervising and training subordinates in the area of skilled craft. Previous school experience is desirable.SKILLS are required to perform multiple, technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: expertise in trade of plumbing, electrical, HVAC and/or related skill; adhering to safety practices; operating equipment used in specific trade; operating standard office equipment using pertinent software applications; and planning and managing projects.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform algebra and/or geometry; review and interpret highly technical information, write technical materials, and/or speak persuasively to implement desired actions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: preventative maintenance, safety, emergency and facility repair, new construction, etc. pertaining to school site facilities; materials, tools, methods and equipment used in building trade i.e. plumbing, painting, locksmith, electrical, mechanical, HVAC, etc.; practices of building and general construction; in-depth knowledge of specific trade; work with plans and specifications; and safety practices and procedures.

- Coordinates work assignments with administration, site personnel, other skilled trades, and outside parties (e.g., vendors, subcontractors, inspectors) for the purpose of completing projects/work orders efficiently and ensuring that maintenance and safety objectives are met within budget guidelines and in compliance with all established regulations and guidelines.
- Diagnoses, dependent on journey level of skilled trade, causes of problems (e.g., cooling/heating/ refrigeration, electrical/light systems/signal and alarms, building renovations/masonry/painting, plumbing) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of materials required at job site.
- Inspects facilities, systems and their components within area of trade expertise (e.g., heating/ventilation units/ new and remodel construction, electrical) for the purpose of ensuring quality of work standards are met and identifying repairs and/or preventive maintenance requirements.
- Installs, builds and maintains systems and component parts (e.g., HVAC: cooling/heating/ refrigeration/emergency management systems; Electrical: electronics/signal and alarm systems wiring/fixtures/switchboards; Plumbing: domestic water and sewer systems; General Maintentance: carpentry/masonry/glazing/playground equipment,classroom and office equipment) for the purpose of maintaining facilities in a safe, comfortable and operating condition.
- Maintains tools and/or equipment appropriate to the skilled trade for the purpose of ensuring the availability of equipment in safe and operating condition as required.
- Monitors in-process and completed work for the purpose of ensuring quality of work standards are met and/or reporting progress and observations as appropriate to appropriate staff.
- Oversees assigned Skilled Maintenance Workers and the day-to-day work assignments for the purpose of ensuring scheduled work assignments are completed in a safe, proper and timely manner maximizing the efficiency of the workforce.
- Participates in scheduled meetings with Maintenance Director, Maintenance Supervisor and/or other Lead Maintenance Workers for the purpose of presenting current status of general department issues, reviewing specific project progress and assisting in scheduling of work activities and assigned Skilled Maintenance Workers.
- Plans and designs systems and/or projects within specific area of trade expertise (e.g., plumbing, mechanical/HVAC, electrical, carpentry) for the purpose of meeting various maintenance and facilities needs.
- Prepares documentation (e.g., time sheets, inventory, work orders, labor/material estimates, repair manuals, blue prints, specifications) for the purpose of providing current and historical reference, required support information and/or conveying information required by others.
- Procures equipment and supplies for the purpose of maintaining inventory and ensuring availability of required items to complete work assignments efficiently and within established time frame.
- Recommends plans, procedures and specific actions for the purpose of addressing department goals, objectives and work-related needs.
- Repairs various items, systems and/or components for the purpose of ensuring that items are available and in safe working condition.
- Trains and supports assigned personnel in procedures and technical skills within specific trade for the purpose of developing their professional and safety awareness skills.
- Transports various items (e.g., tools, equipment, supplies) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of materials required at job site.
- Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.Experience:Job related experience within specialized field is required.
