HIM / Coding SupervisorThe HIM/Coding Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the technical and administrative operations of the Health Information Management (HIM) Unit, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and accrediting agency regulations governing medical records management. This role provides leadership to clerical and credentialed technical staff, manages workflow, and ensures the accuracy, integrity, and confidentiality of all patient health information.Key ResponsibilitiesInterpret and apply federal, state, and accrediting agency regulations related to medical records management, privacy, and security.Plan, assign, and supervise daily chartroom and technical operations within the HIM Unit.Oversee critical HIM functions including:Release of informationChart assembly and analysisInpatient and outpatient disease codingTranscriptionBirth and death certificate processingDisability claim processingSupervise and support clerical and credentialed coding staff involved in:Medical record maintenanceCoding and abstractingDocumentation for third-party payersData collection, reporting, and other HIM functionsEstablish and maintain procedures, record systems, and workflow standards ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.Monitor staff quality, productivity, and overall performance; address complaints and resolve operational issues.Ensure all release-of-information processes comply with internal policies, state and federal laws, and HIPAA regulations.Review patient records for completeness and accuracy; coordinate necessary corrections or updates with authorized personnel.Serve as a liaison to physicians, clinical departments, third-party reviewers, and external agencies as needed.Prepare reports on chart accuracy, coding quality, productivity, and other HIM metrics.Conduct and/or oversee coding studies, case mix analysis, outlier reviews, and medical record abstracting as required.Prepare, analyze, and submit correspondence, data, and departmental reports.Represent the HIM department in court proceedings when necessary.Minimum QualificationsMust possess one of the following credentials:Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT)Certified Coding Specialist (CCS)Certified Professional Coder (CPC)At least two (2) years of full-time experience within the past five (5) years supervising medical records coders in an acute care hospital setting.
