What are the responsibilities and job description for the Asphalt Foreperson position at L.L. Pelling Company, Inc.?
The foreperson leads and directly supervises about 12 employees on an asphalt crew and is responsible for ensuring maximum yield and desired smoothness, densities, elevations, and drainage.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Directly supervise 12 employees. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, promoting, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Foreperson carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the company’s policies and applicable laws.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Follow and enforce compliance with all federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and rules, including company policies and procedures.
- Conduct weekly on-the-job safety training, i.e., toolbox safety talks.
- Track, record, and submit material volumes and labor hours electronically.
- Maintain working relationships across the company and with outside contacts, including inspectors, subcontractors, quality control personnel, and owners.
- Comply with IDOT traffic control standards.
- Provide an electronic log of equipment hours of operation and repair orders.
- Other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES
- Must have regular, dependable attendance to be physically present each day.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to manage diverse team members in stressful situations.
- Must be able to read and interpret documents such as plans, contracts, safety regulations, and procedure manuals.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office suite.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Above average mechanical skills.
- Able to solve practical problems.
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
- Able to pass pre-employment drug test.
- Able to pass pre-employment screenings, which may include written and/or electronic testing of knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Fluent in reading, writing, and speaking English. Preference given to candidates bilingual in Spanish.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- 2 years of asphalt paving experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Be at least 18 years of age.
- Valid driver’s license with insurable driving record.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This position involves extended periods of walking around heavy-highway construction job sites alongside moving equipment and open lanes of traffic.
- Able to work in all weather conditions.
- Must be able to safely work alongside moving construction equipment and open lanes of traffic in both day and night conditions.
- Able to safely drive a company vehicle to and from job sites and company locations.
- Have clarity of speech and hearing which permits effective communication.
- Have sufficient vision to permit moderate review of a wide variety of materials including job plans and specifications, both in electronic and hardcopy formats.
- Have sufficient vision including depth perception and peripheral vision.
- Have sufficient manual dexterity to operate heavy construction equipment, operate a tablet, and fill out paperwork by hand.
- Lift, push, pull, and/or carry up to 25 pounds regularly; occasionally up to 50 pounds.
- Stand, sit, squat, kneel, bend, crouch, twist, reach, and climb into and out of equipment.
WORK SCHEDULE
Days and hours of work vary including overnight and weekend work based on weather, project size, and location.
- Must be able to work 50 hours per week.
- Able to work overnight and weekends as needed.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Job hazards include exposure to dust, noise, fumes, and all types of weather conditions.
- Regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and heavy equipment.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
