Position Summary
The Used Car Manager is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the pre-owned vehicle department, including inventory acquisition, pricing strategy, merchandising, sales performance, profitability, and team leadership.
This role requires strong market awareness, operational excellence, and the ability to drive results while delivering an exceptional customer and employee experience.
Responsibilities
- Manage all daily operations of the used vehicle department
- Source and acquire quality pre-owned inventory through auctions, trades, and direct purchases
- Analyze market trends and adjust pricing strategies to maximize profitability and inventory turn
- Appraise trade-ins and determine competitive purchase values
- Ensure inventory is properly merchandised, reconditioned, and front-line ready
- Monitor aging inventory and implement strategies to maintain healthy inventory levels
- Work closely with the sales team to drive used vehicle sales performance
- Develop and coach sales staff to improve productivity and customer satisfaction
- Collaborate with service, finance, and leadership teams to ensure smooth operations
- Review sales reports, KPIs, and department performance metrics regularly
- Ensure compliance with company policies, manufacturer standards, and legal requirements
- Maintain strong customer relationships and resolve escalated customer concerns when necessary
Qualifications
- Previous experience as a Used Car Manager or strong automotive sales management experience required
- Proven track record of driving sales performance and department profitability
- Strong knowledge of vehicle appraisals, auctions, market pricing, and inventory management
- Excellent leadership, communication, and team development skills
- Strong analytical and decision-making abilities
- Customer-focused mindset with a commitment to delivering best-in-class service
- Ability to work flexible schedules, including some evenings and weekends
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
- High school diploma required; college degree preferred
