Korean Services of Metropolitan New York, Inc. (KCS) was founded in 1973 to provide social services to Korean immigrants and the wider immigrant community to fully integrate into society and overcome any economic, health, and linguistic barriers so that they become independent and thriving members of the community. KCS is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that receives support from government agencies, foundations, corporations, and individuals. The organization’s primary objective is to offer social service programs that cater to the community’s diverse needs. We accomplish this goal by providing culturally competent professional services in immigration, education, aging, workforce development, public health, and mental health.
Position Summary
KCS is seeking a dedicated and talented Program Coordinator to support the Immigration & Legal Services Department. This position will assist the Administration Officer, In-house Attorney, and Law Clerk in delivering high-quality legal services, coordinating client casework, supporting community outreach, and ensuring compliance with grant requirements.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:
I. Core Legal & Casework
- Conduct screenings, intakes, and case assessments for individuals seeking immigration and legal assistance.
- Prepare and file immigration applications and supporting legal documents, including but not limited to:N-400 (Naturalization), I-90 (Green Card Renewal/Replacement), N-600 (Certificate of Citizenship), I-131 (Travel Document), N-565 (Citizenship Replacement), Petition to Remove Conditions on Residence (I-751), Certificate of Citizenship (N-600), U.S. Passport (DS-11, DS-82, DS-64), Alien's Change of Address (AR-11), Employment Authorization, DACA, and other USCIS applications
- Expand the client base through targeted outreach and promotional initiatives, and build and manage a sustainable lawyer pro bono network to strengthen and expand service capacity.
- Draft legal memoranda analyzing issues and applying relevant statutes, regulations, and case law to the facts of each case.
- Conduct comprehensive legal research on statutes, regulations, agency memos, case law, and other authoritative sources to support case preparation.
- Confer with attorneys regarding case strategy, legal questions, and evidentiary needs.
II. Client Communication & Administrative Support
- Schedule attorney–client appointments and ensure timely follow-ups.
- Manage and follow up on incoming client inquiries, ensuring timely responses and maintaining active communication with community members.
- Maintain a detailed, accurate, and confidential client database.
- Provide administrative support to ensure smooth departmental operations, including scheduling and document organization.
- Supervise and oversee legal volunteers and interns.
III. Community Outreach & Legal Workshop
- Organize and conduct outreach activities, trainings, and educational workshops on immigration and legal issues.
- Develop outreach materials and ensure accessibility for diverse immigrant communities.
- Attend hearings, testify, and engage in advocacy efforts to protect and empower immigrant communities.
- Represent KCS in stakeholder meetings with USCIS and other immigration-related coalitions.
IV. Policy, Grants & Compliance
- Research funding opportunities, draft and submit grant proposals, and ensure compliance with all deliverables.
- Create reports on community needs, impacts, and other relevant information for funders and other reporting needs
- Execute grant deliverables including, but not limited to, “Know Your Rights” programming and NYC/NYS-funded grant obligations.
- Prepare reports on community needs, program impacts, and other data required by funders and regulatory agencies.
Education and Experience Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree required; paralegal certificate or legal studies background strongly preferred.
- Minimum 2 years of experience in immigration law, legal services, or nonprofit casework.
- Bilingual in Korean and English required.
- Prior experience with grants, program reporting, or outreach initiatives is a plus.
- Strong commitment to public service; non-profit experience preferred.
- Interest and experience in working with the Asian-American community.
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)
Knowledge
- Cultural Sensitivity: Understanding of cultural differences and ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
- Knowledge of immigration law and ability to provide consultation for immigration-related matters and other general legal inquiries highly preferred.
Abilities
- Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, in the language(s) necessary to perform the essential functions of the position (e.g., English, Korean, or both), including the ability to hear, speak, and be understood in the work environment.
- Ability to work well both independently and in teams.
- Ability to provide consultation for immigration related matters and other general legal inquiries highly preferred.
Skills
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Excellent organizational skills, with demonstrated ability to manage concurrent multiple assignments, meet tight deadlines, and prioritize efficiently with minimal supervision.
- Self-motivated, highly efficient, strong attention to details.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
- Sharp public speaking skills highly preferred.
