Position Summary
An Outpatient Infusion Coding Specialist accurately assigns ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS codes for outpatient infusion services, focusing on diagnosis, drug administration (NDC codes), infusion/injection procedures, and modifiers, using EHRs and coding software to ensure compliance and proper billing for therapies like IV hydration, chemotherapy, and other injected medications in clinics or hospitals.
Responsibilities
Codes Infusion and Injection Therapy Services assigning diagnoses (ICD-10-CM), procedures (CPT), drugs/supplies (HCPCS/NDC), and applies modifiers for infusion services
Reviews assigned charges within the medical record to verify orders and procedures carried out
Verifies accurate billing and identifies areas for improvement
Ensures adherence to coding guidelines
Monitors the status of unbilled reports, charges, and missing documents, correcting errors promptly
Reviews, analyzes, and resolves coding-related denials for outpatient infusion services
Reviews and requests charge corrections on patient accounts, making changes and account activity requests as appropriate
Maintains knowledge and compliance with all current hospital and departmental policies
Communicates to various departments when charges need adding, deleting, or changing and when discharge dispositions and patient type/status need clarifying
Ensures compliance with department Charge Capture and any governmental coding regulations
Participates in department performance improvement reviews and charge capture reviews
Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals
Regular and predictable attendance is an essential job function
Performs other related duties as assigned
Competent to meet age-specific needs of the unit assigned
Requirements and Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent preferred
Minimum 2 years coding or abstracting I & I charge experience required
Previous experience with Epic and a working knowledge of Epic applications and workflows required
Previous Meditech Expanse experience preferred
Coding certification through AHIMA or AAPC required
Strong computer skills including working knowledge of Excel and Word
Ability to adapt quickly to new systems and tools
