Position Summary:
The Kitchen Assistant Manager oversees the operation of the Kokomo Rescue Mission kitchen, ensuring nutritious, high-quality meals are prepared and served safely, efficiently, and with excellence during scheduled shifts. The Assistant Manager leads staff, residents, and volunteers while maintaining an organized, welcoming, and Christ-centered kitchen environment that demonstrates the compassion of Jesus through food, service, dignity, and respect.
Main Responsibilities
1. Meal Preparation and Kitchen Operations
- Coordinate daily meal preparation for approximately 75 people at breakfast and 200–300 people at lunch and dinner according to the provided menu.
- Be present during food preparation and cooking to direct, supervise, and assist kitchen workers and volunteers.
- Maintain an organized, efficient, safe, and welcoming kitchen that treats everyone served with dignity and compassion.
2. Food Safety, Sanitation, and Compliance
- Lead workers and volunteers in maintaining a clean, sanitary, safe, and organized commercial kitchen.
- Ensure daily cleaning procedures and checklists are completed and signed by the closing manager.
- Ensure compliance with current ServSafe standards, Board of Health regulations, and other applicable food-safety requirements.
- Ensure food is properly received, stored, labeled, prepared, served, and discarded.
- Maintain required kitchen, food-safety, temperature, cleaning, and sanitation records.
3. Leadership, Training, and Development
- Train kitchen workers, residents, and volunteers in food preparation, sanitation, safety, kitchen procedures, and commercial kitchen skills that may prepare them for future food-service employment.
- Establish & maintain clear expectations for boundaries, respect, communication, personal responsibility, teamwork, and performance.
- Provide direction, encouragement, correction, and accountability to workers and volunteers.
- Model professionalism, dependability, humility, and servant leadership.
- Model and promote excellent customer service, teaching team members to demonstrate the love and compassion of Jesus Christ through their words, attitudes, actions, and meals served.
4. Inventory, Donations, and Recordkeeping
During scheduled shifts:
- Use designated systems to ensure accurate records are maintained of all in-kind food donations received by the kitchen.
- Maintain records of food transferred between Kokomo Rescue Mission locations.
- Monitor inventory and communicate anticipated shortages or excess supplies to appropriate staff.
- Ensure food is properly stored and rotated to maintain freshness, reduce waste, and ensure food safety.
- Accurately record hours worked by resident kitchen workers.
- Faithfully steward donated food, purchased supplies, equipment, time, and other Mission resources.
5. Scheduling, Communication, and Accountability
- Arrive on time, prepared, and ready to lead each scheduled shift.
- Maintain accurate schedules and sign-in/sign-out procedures for resident workers and volunteers.
- Clearly communicate expectations and hold kitchen workers accountable for attendance, preparation, conduct, and assigned responsibilities.
- Promptly address attendance, performance, conduct, and other concerns appropriately.
- Report significant daily attendance, performance, behavioral, or staffing concerns to the Kitchen Manager.
- Maintain reliable communication with the Kitchen Manager and other appropriate KRM staff.
6. Mission, Ministry, and Stewardship
- Perform all responsibilities in support of the Kokomo Rescue Mission's mission of demonstrating the compassion of Jesus to the hungry in our community.
- Treat residents, guests, volunteers, staff, donors, and community members with dignity, patience, kindness, and respect.
- Create a kitchen culture of excellence, compassion, respect, accountability, teamwork, and service.
- Perform other kitchen or ministry-related duties as assigned by the Kitchen Manager.
Requirements:
Employment at Kokomo Rescue Mission:
- Must possess a personal faith in Jesus Christ and pursue growing that faith in community with other believers.
- Must believe and adhere to the Kokomo Rescue Mission Doctrinal Statement and qualifications for employment outlined in the handbook.
- Must carry out the mission and vision of the Kokomo Rescue Mission while doing daily tasks.
- Must follow the leadership of the supervisor and work well with other KRM staff and clients.

Education or Skill Set:
- Food service experience preferred.
- Must become ServSafe certified within the first month of employment.
