Company Description Knox Area Rescue Ministries (KARM) serves individuals and families in crisis in the Knoxville area by providing safe shelter, nutritious meals, and recovery services. Guided by a mission of rescue, relationships, and restoration, KARM focuses on meeting immediate needs while building supportive connections that encourage long-term stability. The organization seeks to help guests restore relationships with self, family, community, and, for those who desire it, faith. KARM provides nearly 1,000 meals every day and shelters about 400 men, women, and children each night. Role Description The Cook is a full-time, on-site position located in Knoxville, TN, responsible for preparing, cooking, and serving meals for guests and program participants. This role includes planning menus within established guidelines, following standardized recipes, and ensuring that meals are nutritious, appealing, and prepared on schedule. The Cook maintains a clean, safe, and organized kitchen environment, adheres to all food safety and sanitation standards, and monitors inventory levels for food and supplies. Day-to-day tasks may include coordinating with other kitchen staff and volunteers, receiving and properly storing donations, and assisting with special events or large-group meal service. The Cook works collaboratively with the broader KARM team to support the organization’s mission of offering hospitality and care to individuals in need.

Qualifications

• Ability to prepare large-volume meals using standardized recipes and basic to intermediate cooking techniques.
• Knowledge of food safety, sanitation practices, and proper food storage in accordance with health regulations.
• Experience working in a commercial or institutional kitchen, cafeteria, catering operation, or similar food-service environment.
• Strong time management and organizational skills to coordinate multiple meal components and meet service schedules.
• Capacity to work collaboratively with staff and volunteers, and communicate clearly and respectfully with diverse groups of people.
• Physical ability to stand for extended periods, lift and carry supplies, and perform routine kitchen cleaning tasks.
• Commitment to KARM’s mission and willingness to serve individuals from varied backgrounds with empathy and professionalism.
• High school diploma or equivalent preferred; food handler certification or similar credential is a plus.
• Prior experience in nonprofit, shelter, or community-based meal programs is beneficial but not required.
