General Position Summary
Klamath County Public Works Department is seeking a skilled Mechanic to perform maintenance and repair work on a wide range of gasoline and diesel vehicles and equipment. This position also includes welding and fabrication tasks in support of departmental operations. The ideal candidate will have extensive mechanical and diagnostic experience and be capable of handling complex repairs independently.
Essential Functions
Duties include, but are not limited to:
Perform minor repairs or replacements on water pumps, starters, cylinder heads, thermostats, alternators, and other vehicle components
Conduct major engine repairs on diesel and gasoline-powered equipment
Diagnose and repair electrical system malfunctions, including full rewiring as needed
Recondition and repair transmissions and differentials
Maintain and repair hydraulic and air brake systems
Install, recondition, and reseal hydraulic systems
Perform welding and fabrication work as required
Assist in emergency tree, limb, and brush removal using chainsaws
Supervisory Responsibilities
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Minimum Qualifications
To be considered for this position, candidates must meet the following requirements:
Education, Certification, and Experience
Education or training in diesel engine repair from an accredited school, or equivalent experience in gasoline and diesel engine maintenance
Knowledge of methods, tools, and practices used in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and equipment
Must provide own hand tools
Valid Oregon Class A Commercial Driver’s License with endorsements for Tank, Doubles/Triples, and Air Brakes
First Aid Certification
CPR Certification
Forklift Training
Current Medical Card
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Language: Ability to read and write simple instructions and correspondence; effectively communicate in small group settings
Math: Ability to perform basic arithmetic, work with fractions and percentages, and interpret graphs
Reasoning: Ability to apply common sense to follow written, oral, and diagrammed instructions; handle routine problems
Physical Requirements
Frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands, reach, climb, kneel, crouch, and talk or hear
Occasionally required to taste or smell
Must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
