Kitsap County is seeking an experienced custodian to fill a critical role maintaining the cleanliness and condition of County facilities during swing shift. This position offers an excellent opportunity to advance your custodial career while making a meaningful impact on both the public’s experience in Kitsap County buildings and the daily work environment of County employees. The role provides a rewarding balance of hands-on work and interaction with employees and the public, making it ideal for a skilled professional ready to take the next step in their career.

As the Custodian, you will:
  • Ensure the daily cleanliness, sanitation, and safety of 23 County facilities, including the Main County Campus, Sheriff’s precincts, Juvenile Detention, Coroner’s Offices, and other community-facing buildings with heavy public traffic.

  • Operate and maintain professional-grade custodial equipment—including auto scrubbers, buffers, extractors, industrial vacuums, and floor machines—to preserve flooring systems and extend surface life across high-use environments.

  • Execute routine and repetitive custodial tasks with minimal supervision, demonstrating accountability for assigned buildings, equipment, and security procedures.

  • Maintain interior public and staff spaces such as offices, lobbies, hallways, restrooms, stairwells, and entrances through systematic cleaning, disinfecting, and floor care practices.

  • Lead by example in safe chemical handling and strict PPE compliance, ensuring adherence to County safety standards while working around machinery, chemicals, and biohazards.

  • Perform advanced floor care services including stripping, waxing, polishing, scrubbing tile and grout, and carpet extraction to County specifications.

  • Support facility operations by replenishing restroom and sanitation supplies, removing trash and recycling, and maintaining kitchens and common-use areas.

  • Protect facility security by securing doors and windows and working responsibly in sensitive locations such as the Jail and Coroner’s Office.

  • Identify and report building maintenance issues, safety hazards, and equipment or supply needs to supervisors to support proactive facility management.

  • Navigate multiple work sites and shifts, including indoor and outdoor assignments, while operating County-owned vehicles in compliance with the Kitsap County Vehicle Use Policy.

Professional Credentials / Licensing:
  • Valid Washington State Driver’s License (required prior to hire) with a satisfactory driving record, enabling operation of County-owned vehicles across multiple facilities.

  • Eligibility for extensive criminal background screening and fingerprinting, required due to unsupervised access to minors, vulnerable adults, and secured County facilities.

Educational Excellence:

  • Six (6) months of general custodial experience, providing foundational knowledge of cleaning methods, equipment use, and workplace safety.

Leadership / Management Experience:

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage assigned workloads, and maintain accountability across multiple buildings without direct supervision—critical for countywide custodial coverage.

Preferred Industry Background:

  • One (1) or more years of commercial or industrial custodial experience (preferred), particularly in public or high-traffic buildings where durability, sanitation, and consistency are essential.

  • One (1) year of commercial floor care experience (preferred), supporting advanced maintenance of tile, carpet, and finished flooring systems.

Communication / Interpersonal Skills:

  • Clear verbal communication and effective hearing, enabling response to alarms, instructions, and coordination with supervisors and County staff.

  • Professional conduct when working in sensitive environments such as detention and coroner facilities.

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

  • One (1) or more years of commercial or industrial custodial experience, particularly in public or high-traffic buildings where durability, sanitation, and consistency are essential.
  • One (1) year of commercial floor care experience, supporting advanced maintenance of tile, carpet, and finished flooring systems.
  • Experience working around biohazards, chemical fumes, loud noise, and machinery vibration, with an understanding of risk mitigation.

  • Willingness and physical capability to climb up to four flights of stairs multiple times daily, work extended periods standing or walking, and perform indoor and outdoor custodial tasks in varying weather conditions.
