The Peer Support Specialist I works under the direct supervision of experienced staff and assists in the service delivery program to consumers. This entry-level position is designed for individuals in the process of developing the skills and abilities needed to independently handle responsibilities in the basic service delivery for consumers. The primary focus is on training and professional development to become an effective and independent participant in the service delivery team. The Peer Support Specialist I provides direct advocacy and support to consumers, with an emphasis on personal growth and program participation.

 

How will I contribute

 

  • Provide direct advocacy and support to consumers, assisting them in navigating their wellness and recovery journeys.
  • Serve as a positive role model by sharing lived experience, offering support, encouragement, and understanding.
  • Assist experienced staff in the development of consumer-driven wellness and recovery plans.
  • Co-facilitate program groups and classes alongside more experienced staff, gaining skills in group dynamics and program facilitation.
  • Provide transportation for clients to and from the facility as needed, ensuring they have access to needed services and appointments.
  • Interact with staff and the public in a professional, respectful, and helpful manner to foster positive relationships and teamwork.
  • Participate in required training and development opportunities to build competencies in delivering services and support.
  • Work closely with supervisors and senior staff to develop the skills necessary to assume greater responsibility and independence within the service delivery process.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the overall functioning and success of the program.
  • May encounter risk of working with persons with SMI (serious mental illness) that may include, but not limited to persons in mental health crisis, persons that may be intoxicated or impaired by drugs or alcohol, persons who may be DTO (danger to others), DTS (Danger to Self), or GD (Gravely Disabled). If such situations arise, staff will be required to call local emergency personnel to help deescalate the crisis, use crisis intervention techniques, and consult with supervisor as soon as practically possible.

 

What I bring

 

  • High School Diploma (or Equivalent)
  • Drivers License: Class C
  • 2 years experience in peer work or completion of a peer training program or certificate of completion for WRAP Seminar I or certificate of completion for Taking Action for Whole Health and Wellbeing Seminar I. Must complete advanced training that equips the individual to handle responsibilities independently. Must be engaged in personal wellness and recovery if a consumer.
  • Strong personal commitment to recovery and wellness, with the ability to share lived experience in a professional manner. Must be a current or past consumer of mental health services or a family member of a consumer if program requires.
  • Basic understanding and appreciation of wellness and recovery principles. Interest in obtaining the knowledge of the philosophy and goals of program assigned, common practices and procedures in wellness and recovery interaction with clients. Excellent communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with consumers, staff, and the public. Willingness to learn and grow through training and hands-on experience. Ability to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate professionalism in all interactions. Valid driver’s license and ability to provide transportation to clients.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams. Detail-oriented, organized, and reliable. Strong communication skills and a proactive attitude are essential for assisting with various tasks. Flexibility, a willingness to learn, and the ability to handle multiple responsibilities are important characteristics for success in the role.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred
