Position Summary
The Summer Camp Counselor is responsible for providing direct care, supervision, and engagement for campers in a safe, structured, and nurturing environment. Counselors implement daily activities, support curriculum goals, and actively participate in all aspects of the camp program, including trips, meals, and classroom maintenance.
Key Responsibilities
Camper Care & Supervision
- Provide active supervision of campers at all times to ensure safety and well-being
- Maintain appropriate staff-to-child ratios in accordance with regulations
- Build positive relationships with campers and support social-emotional development
- Address behaviors using appropriate guidance and redirection techniques
Program Implementation
- Assist with lesson planning and implement daily curriculum and scheduled activities
- Facilitate games, group activities, and enrichment experiences
- Prepare materials and set up activities in advance
- Adapt activities to meet the needs and interests of campers
Field Trips & Activities
- Supervise and actively engage with campers during off-site trips
- Follow all safety procedures and guidelines during transportation and outings
- Conduct headcounts and ensure accountability at all times
Operations & Support
- Assist with meal service, including set-up, supervision, and clean-up
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of camp spaces, including classrooms and common areas
- Support daily routines including transitions, rest periods (if applicable), and group movement
Qualifications
- Previous experience working with children in a camp, childcare, or educational setting preferred
- Ability to engage children in a positive, energetic, and structured manner
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- Reliable, punctual, and flexible in a fast-paced environment
- CPR/First Aid Certification (or willingness to obtain)
Pennsylvania Childcare Compliance Requirements
All candidates must meet the pre-service requirements for childcare staff in Pennsylvania, including:
- Current Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Background Check
- Child Abuse Clearance (PA Department of Human Services)
- FBI Fingerprint-Based Federal Criminal History Check (if applicable)
- Completion of Mandated Reporter Training
- Completion of a Health Assessment
- Verification of age, education, and experience as required by Pennsylvania regulations
All clearances must be current and maintained in accordance with Pennsylvania Department of Human Services (DHS) regulations.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to actively participate in indoor and outdoor activities daily
- Ability to stand, walk, and engage with children for extended periods
- Ability to lift up to 25–40 pounds as needed
Work Schedule
- Seasonal summer position with flexible hours based on camp needs
- Availability for field trips and extended activity days required
