POSITION OVERVIEW
We are seeking an experienced educator to lead our after-school STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) program at King Urban Life Center. This leadership role focuses on creating engaging, hands-on learning experiences for school-age children from diverse backgrounds on Buffalo's East Side.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
STEAM Program Leadership
- Design and implement age-appropriate STEAM curriculum and activities for school-age children
- Lead hands-on learning sessions in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics
- Create an inclusive, engaging learning environment that celebrates diverse learning styles
- Develop programming that builds critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills
- Maintain safe learning spaces with proper supervision and safety protocols
- Build positive relationships with children and their families
- Track program outcomes and document student progress
- Coordinate with schools and community partners to enhance programming
- Manage program supplies, materials, and equipment
Cultural Responsiveness
- Work effectively with children and families from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds
- Incorporate culturally relevant teaching methods and content
- Build trust and rapport with families in the community
- Support children's academic and social-emotional development with cultural sensitivity
SCHEDULE AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Part-time position: 20 hours per week
- After-school program hours: 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM
- Work schedule: 2:00 PM - 6:00 PM (includes one hour for program planning and preparation)
- Located at King Urban Life Center, 938 Genesee Street, Buffalo, New York
- Optional additional hours available for King Urban Family Fun events (last Friday of each month)
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience working with school-age children in educational settings
- Knowledge of STEAM education principles and hands-on learning approaches
- Experience working with urban youth and families from minority backgrounds
- Strong classroom management and behavior guidance skills
- Ability to create engaging, age-appropriate curriculum
- Excellent communication skills with children, families, and colleagues
- Cultural competency and commitment to equity in education
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in Education, Child Development, or related field
- Teaching certification or relevant educational credentials
- Experience with after-school programming or youth development programs
- Bilingual skills (especially Spanish or other languages spoken by families in our service area)
- Knowledge of trauma-informed practices and positive youth development
- Experience with project-based learning and hands-on STEAM activities
- Background working in urban educational settings
- Previous experience serving diverse, multicultural communities
