JOB DESCRIPTION 

 

Summary/Objective 

 

The Reefer Mechanic is responsible for providing quality maintenance and repairs within given standard times, as well as scheduled and unscheduled maintenance. The employee is responsible for practicing safe work habits and for maintaining a clean and safe work place environment. 

 

Essential Functions

  1. Inspects, maintain and repair all refrigerated containers and genets, as required. 
  2. Performs maintenance in accordance with company standards 
  3. Completes a safety risk assessment prior all work performed 
  4. Diagnoses complex mechanical, refrigerant, and electrical problems related to all Reefer systems (single & multi-temp), including cooling, heating and container computer modules. 
  5. Performs repairs and diagnostics on starting and charging systems, complex cooling and re-charge, and electrical including common fault codes. Repairs include performing leak detection procedures, compressor replacements, rebuilding throttling valves, soldering refrigerant lines, evaporator/condenser replacements and front main engine seal replacements. 
  6. Perform repair and maintenance on reefer units in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications. 
  7. Identify and obtain necessary replacement parts as needed to execute repairs. 
  8. Must be consistently capable of independently analyzing and safely resolving problems. 
  9. Responsible for preventative maintenance and repairs of container refrigeration. Conducts general and non-scheduled maintenance, including inspecting, troubleshooting, repairing and/or replacing components and systems. 
  10. Ensures safe use of all shop equipment, power and hand-held tools. 
  11. Performs road calls and emergency services as necessary 
  12. Communicates professionally with team members, supervisors, and customers. 
  13. Actively participates in safety or educational training as required 
  14. Follows all safety standards & guidelines, including but not limited to, wearing of safety glasses, wearing of steel-toed/safety shoes, appropriate safety gloves as needed, and proper attire 
  15. Performs any other management requests or directives as requested 
  16. Other duties as assigned. 

 

Experience and Skills 

 

1. High School Diploma 

2. 2 years hands-on experience in Cargo Container Reefer maintenance, diagnosis and repair  

3. Ability to utilize computer systems to diagnose reefer systems 

4. Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance 

5. Must be able to speak and read conversational English 

 

Supervisory Responsibility 

 

This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities. 

 

Work Environment 

 

This position works in a port/terminal setting, with ample outdoor exposure during the workday. This role routinely stands for prolonged periods of time and performs other physical activities as needed. Position requires work outdoors in hot/humid, cold, and other inclement weather conditions depending on the time of year. This role randomly uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines, and standard warehouse equipment such as hand trucks, box cutters and tape dispensers. 

 

Physical Demands 

 

  • Lifting up to 50 lbs. without assistance and up to 150 lbs. with job aids or co-worker assistance 
  • Carrying up to 25 lbs. for a distance up to 200 feet 
  • Pushing/Pulling up to 80 lbs. without assistance and up to 250 lbs. with job aids or co-worker assistance 
  • Standing/Walking activities are encountered during 75% of the normal work day 
  • Sitting activities are normally not encountered outside of normal work breaks and would not exceed 10% of a work day 
  • Stooping/Bending/Squatting activities are encountered on a frequent basis 
  • Kneeling/Crouching/Crawling activities are encountered approximately 5% of an average work day 
  • Climbing would comprise no more than 5% of an individual’s time 
  • Reaching activities are conducted on a frequent and repetitive basis throughout the work day 
  • An individual may be required to perform twisting activities, dependent on the type of position he need to place himself in while performing his/her job duties 

 

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work 

 

This is a fulltime position. Days and hours of work vary depending on the company’s needs. 

 

Travel 

 

No travel is expected for this position. 

 

Additional Eligibility Qualifications 

 

Applicant needs to be able to obtain a Ports ID and a TWIC card 

 

Work Authorization/Security Clearance 

 

Employee must be authorized to work in the United States.
