Duties/Responsibilities:
• Inspections and diagnostics: Help mechanics perform visual and computerized inspections to identify mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical malfunctions in heavy equipment. Consult service manuals, blueprints, and schematics to diagnose complex issues.
• Repairs and overhauls: Assist with repairs, rebuilding, or replace damaged or worn components such as engines, transmissions, axles, brake systems, hydraulic pumps, golf carts, buses, mule trucks, forklifts, top loaders.
• Preventative maintenance: Support mechanics conduct routine maintenance tasks, including hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical machinery, lubricating joints, changing fluids and filters, and cleaning parts to prevent breakdowns and extend equipment life.
• Organization: Maintains a clean and safe repair shop.
• Welding and fabrication: Perform welding and fabrication to repair or modify equipment as needed.
• Testing and adjustment: Test equipment after repair to ensure proper and safe operation, making any necessary final adjustments.
• Record keeping: Document all service, maintenance, and repair work performed, including parts used and hours logged.
• Safety compliance: Adhere to all safety protocols and regulations, using personal protective equipment (PPE) to minimize risk.

Required Skills/Abilities:
• Experience: Candidates typically need proven experience working with diesel and/or heavy equipment repair and willingness to learn.
• Technical knowledge: Strong understanding of diesel and gasoline engines, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, electrical systems, and computerized diagnostic tools.
• Physical stamina: The ability to lift heavy equipment and parts, stand for extended periods, and work in uncomfortable or awkward positions.
• Problem-solving skills: Excellent troubleshooting and analytical abilities to accurately diagnose mechanical issues.
• Manual dexterity: Proficiency with a wide variety of hand tools and power tools.
• Communication: Effective verbal and written communication skills to consult with team members and accurately document repairs.
Physical Requirements:
• Prolonged periods working on vehicles and equipment.
• Must be physically able to access vehicles and equipment either by kneeling or lying on back.
• Must be able to lift 50 pounds at a time.
Preferred Qualifications:
1. Education: High School Diploma or GED
2. Languages: Fluent English/ Bilingual a plus
3. Applicants need to be able to obtain a Ports ID and a TWIC card
Supervisory Responsibility
This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities.
Work Environment
This position works in a port/terminal setting, with ample outdoor exposure during the workday. This role routinely stands for prolonged periods of time and performs other physical activities as needed. Position requires work outdoors in hot/humid, cold, and other inclement weather conditions depending on the time of year. This role randomly uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines, and standard warehouse equipment such as hand trucks, box cutters and tape dispensers.
