Chassis Mechanic (Shop)
Summary/Objective
Inspects, diagnoses, and performs mechanical repairs and maintenance on the chassis and trailers of vehicles used in shipping and transportation. Responsibilities include repairing brakes, suspension, steering systems, and lighting, as well as performing minor welding and fabrication on chassis and shipping containers. The role requires physical strength, the ability to work in various weather conditions, and detailed record-keeping of all repairs.
Essential Functions
Chassis Mechanics are responsible for the repairing of chassis for maritime, as well as domestic and intermodal equipment.
- Selects appropriate materials to repair/weld equipment
- Lays out, positions, aligns, and fits components together
- Bolts, clamps, tack-welds, or otherwise fastens parts to secure in position for welding and/or repairing
- Sets up equipment and welds parts, using appropriate welding equipment
- Troubleshoots and repairs 12 –16 DC Volt electrical, and air/ABS brake systems
- Re-wiring/replacing lights & 7-Way Receptacles
- Replace brake shoes, kits, chambers, s-cams, s-cam rollers, auto & manual slack adjusters, drums, air tank and any air brake lines in conjunction with air brake system.
- Complete FHWA inspections and documents
- Repairs aluminum/stainless steel parts by welding
- Completes quality control and/or inbound inspections and produces repair estimates as necessary
- Documents completed repairs
- Repairs equipment by dismantling, straightening (cold or with heat), replacing reshaping, reassembling and painting or recoating parts
- Completes all types of structural modifications/conversions on equipment
- Handle, repairs, and replaces tire and wheel components
- Applies decals/stenciling on equipment as necessary
- Operate appropriate powered industrial equipment as required
- Responsible for clean-up and/or other depot maintenance as necessary
- Acts as a spotter and fire watcher as needed
- Assists with general repair duties and depot maintenance as required
- Container Repairs includes but not limited to:
- Repair/Replace Panels
- Top/Side/Front
- Repair/Replace Crossmembers
- Repair/Replace Door/Hardware
- Repair/Section Top/Bottom rail
- Follows all safety standards & guidelines, including but not limited to, wearing of safety glasses, wearing of steel-toed/safety shoes, appropriate safety gloves as needed, and proper attire
- Performs any other management requests or directives

Preferred Qualifications:
- Education: High School Diploma or GED
- Experience: Have a combination of training or experience totaling at least 3 years
- Languages: Fluent English/ Bilingual a plus
- Applicants need to be able to obtain a Ports ID and a TWIC card

Supervisory Responsibility
This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities.
Work Environment
This position works in a port/terminal setting, with ample outdoor exposure during the workday. This role routinely stands for prolonged periods of time and performs other physical activities as needed. Position requires work outdoors in hot/humid, cold, and other inclement weather conditions depending on the time of year. This role randomly uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines, and standard warehouse equipment such as hand trucks, box cutters and tape dispensers.
Physical Demands
- Lift up to 50 lbs. without assistance and up to 150 lbs. with job aids or co-worker assistance
- Carrying up to 25 lbs. for a distance up to 200 feet
- Pushing/Pulling up to 80 lbs. without assistance and up to 250 lbs. with job aids or co-worker assistance
- Standing/Walking activities are encountered during 75% of the normal workday
- Sitting activities are normally not encountered outside of normal work breaks and would not exceed 10% of a workday
- Stooping/Bending/Squatting activities are encountered on a frequent basis
- Kneeling/Crouching/Crawling activities are encountered approximately 5% of an average workday
- Climbing would comprise no more than 5% of an individual’s time
- Reaching activities are conducted on a frequent and repetitive basis throughout the workday
- An individual may be required to perform twisting activities, depending on the type of position he need to place himself in while performing his/her job duties
