JOB DESCRIPTION

Performs responsible protective service and human support work providing courtroom security; does related work as required. The work may be performed under emergency conditions and involve considerable personal hazard. Work is performed under regular supervision.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:

Ensuring courtroom security; transporting prisoners; preparing and maintaining files and records.

  • Ensures the security and order of courtrooms prior to and during court sessions.
  • Transports prisoners to and from court when required to do so.
  • Responds and carries out all orders of the judge.
  • Searches courtroom and prisoners for contraband prior to entering court and before returning to lock-up.
  • Verifies attorney bar cards prior to accessing courtroom; scans all other persons; searches brief cases; bags; purses; etc.; assists handicapped and special needs persons.
  • Notifies attorneys and public defenders of appearance times.
  • Tracks prisoner clothes and inventories personal property.
  • Arranges jury room for sessions; issues number tags to jurors; verifies jury attendance.
  • Sorts; dates; timestamps and serves civil process.
  • Performs a variety of office assistance duties such as filing; copying; typing; maintaining records and assisting the public; etc.
  • Performs related tasks as required.


MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

Thorough knowledge of the laws and procedures of court operations; general knowledge of the street system and geography of the County; general knowledge of the laws and procedures of civil process; ability to exercise tact and judgment in handling visitors of the court and in maintaining the behavior of prisoners; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to deal courteously but firmly with the public; ability to solve problems within scope of responsibility; skill in the operation of motor vehicles; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates; court personnel; inmates and the general public.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

This is sedentary work requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally; and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects; work requires stooping; kneeling; crouching; reaching; standing; walking; grasping; and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately; loudly; or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for depth perception; color perception; peripheral vision; preparing and analyzing written or computer data; visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts; operation of machines; determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work; and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside environmental conditions. The worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be a Virginia resident. Possession of an appropriate driver’s license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Possession of CPR court security and civil process certifications. Must meet and maintain all department and State training and education requirements for position. The selection process may include any or all of the following: Written Test Physical Agility Test Polygraph examination Background Investigation and Interview Board.
