This recruitment may be used to establish a pool of qualified candidates to fill future Industrial Machinist/Mechanics - Lead at the West Point Treatment Plant Career Service vacancies within the Wastewater Treatment Division over the next 6 months.




Lead a team of mechanics in the repair, troubleshooting, and maintenance of plant equipment for both planned and unscheduled work. Perform hands-on maintenance and provide expert guidance and advice on mechanical systems. Inspect work in progress to ensure it meets trades standards, adheres to schedules, and follows safe working practices. Monitor work quality and quantity and provide recommendations to improve methods and solve problems. Participate in Capital Improvement Projects as assigned, providing subject matter expertise (SME) input to project management for pumping station designs and improvements. Responsible for scheduling and coordinating work between the construction manager and other crafts.

About the Role:

The West Point Onsite Mechanical Lead plays a critical role in maintaining the reliability and efficiency of our wastewater treatment operations. This position leads high-level mechanical maintenance work and coordinates onsite activities that directly support plant performance, safety, and community impact. 

Working in a collaborative team environment, this individual will use their journey-level mechanical expertise to conduct and oversee repairs on a wide range of rotating and stationary equipment, including:

  • Conveyance systems
  • Biosolids decanting blowers
  • Influent and effluent pumps
  • Chemical pumps and disinfection systems
  • Biogas scrubbing compressors
  • Gearboxes and piping systems
  • Other plant mechanical systems typical of a water and wastewater treatment facility, including mixers, aeration blowers, and process valves

What You Will Be Doing:
  • Provide lead direction and technical assistance to mechanical maintenance staff. Lead responsibilities include, but are not limited to, determining work assignments, setting priorities and schedules, training staff, participating in hiring, and providing feedback on performance evaluations. Technical duties include training, troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining mechanical equipment and systems.
  • Inspect work in progress to ensure maintenance meets trades standards, schedules are met, and safe working practices are followed. Monitor work quality and quantity, and provide suggestions to supervisors and staff to improve methods and solve problems.
  • Review and evaluate work orders to determine scheduling and priorities. Organize, prepare, maintain, and verify accuracy of equipment history records, ensuring work is performed efficiently and cost-effectively.
  • Make decisions and facilitate communication between work groups as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications You Bring:
  • Knowledge of journey-level mechanical maintenance or millwright work, supported by experience in an industrial maintenance environment.
  • Knowledge of supervisory and lead-work principles, including basic human resources practices.
  • Oral and written communication skills sufficient to read, write, and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Knowledge and experience in applying maintenance planning and scheduling techniques and principles.
  • Skill in troubleshooting and resolving equipment and machinery issues with limited documentation.
  • Skill in working effectively in a team environment, including collaboration with employees in skilled trades classifications.

Required licenses:
  • Valid Washington State Driver’s License.
  • Additional licenses, certifications, and other requirements determined to be necessary to meet the business needs of the employing unit may be required.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Advanced knowledge and hands-on experience with pumps, plumbing, hydraulics, welding, and rigging techniques.
  • Experience applying root cause analysis and life cycle analysis to mechanical equipment troubleshooting and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of industrial safety standards and best practices related to mechanical maintenance work.

Physical Requirement: 
  • Lifting and carrying equipment weighing up to 50 pounds on a regular basis.
  • Working in confined spaces.
  • Climbing in and out of tanks using ladders.
  • Working outdoors on uneven terrain.
  • Duties are performed regularly and are essential functions of the position.

Workplace Exposures:
  •  Outdoors environment during wet weather, confined space and being exposed to noxious odors and high noise levels.

Working Conditions:

  • Work Location: West Point Treatment Plant - 1400 Discovery Park Blvd, Seattle, WA 98199. 

  • Work Schedule: This full-time position works a 40-hour work week.  This position is covered under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is overtime eligible.

  • Union Representation: This position is represented by SEIU Local 925.
