King County Information Technology (KCIT) is seeking a Network Engineer, Journey to join the Institutional Network (I-Net) team. KCIT’s I-Net is a countywide fiber optic network delivering high-speed data, voice, and video services to approximately 300 public facilities, including schools, libraries, government agencies, and nonprofits.

This role is responsible for engineering, maintaining, and enhancing the County’s fiber optic and enterprise network infrastructure to ensure secure, reliable, and high-performing connectivity for mission-critical public services.

Job Duties

Acts as a Network Engineer supporting KCIT’s Institutional Network (I-Net), with responsibility for engineering, operations, and lifecycle management of the County’s fiber optic infrastructure and connected enterprise network systems.

  • Engineer, configure, deploy, and maintain fiber optic transport systems, including optical networking platforms and related infrastructure.
  • Support and maintain enterprise routing and switching environments supporting approximately 300 connected public facilities.
  • Monitor network performance and availability using enterprise monitoring tools; proactively identify, troubleshoot, and resolve incidents affecting I-Net services.
  • Plan and implement network upgrades, patches, and technology refresh efforts to ensure reliability, scalability, and security of the I-Net infrastructure.
  • Troubleshoot complex Layer 1–3 network issues, including fiber transport, optical circuits, routing, switching, and VLAN configurations.
  • Coordinate with service providers, vendors, and internal KCIT teams to resolve outages, implement new services, and support network expansion projects.
  • Support provisioning of new sites and services, including circuit turn-ups, equipment installation, configuration, and validation testing.
  • Maintain accurate network documentation, diagrams, standard operating procedures, and asset records.
  • Participate in change management processes, including testing, validation, and post-implementation review of network changes.
  • Ensure compliance with County IT policies, security standards, and industry best practices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of I-Net operations and strategic initiatives.

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

  • Three years or more experience in an IT role, performing the administration and maintenance of enterprise network systems according to established industry best practices with the customers in mind.
  • Three years or more experience implementing enterprise networks including wide area and local area network technologies.
  • Two or more years’ current experience in configuration management of Cisco routers, Cisco switches, and security tools and appliances.
  • One year or more experience in reading and interpreting architectural designs, technical specifications and other technical documents.
  • One year or more experience in current engineering and monitoring tools.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including technical articulation and documentation.
  • Ability to effectively engage in and sustain relationships with people from diverse cultures and socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Real ID required (Passport, Enhanced DL or Enhanced State ID)

Desirable Qualifications

  • Five years or more experience in an IT role, performing the administration and maintenance of enterprise network systems according to established industry best practices with the customers in mind.
  • Three years or more years' current experience in configuration management of Cisco routers, Cisco switches, and security tools and appliances.

Other Qualifications

  • Valid Real ID required (Passport, Enhanced WA State Driver's License or Enhanced WA State ID).
  • Successful completion of a Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) background check including fingerprinting.
  • Lift and carry up to 50 pounds with reasonable accommodations.
  • Participation in an After-Hours Support Rotation (required).

Special Requirement

This position requires a REAL ID–compliant identification. The employee must perform duties at Federal Government facilities that require REAL ID for access.

Hybrid Work

The work associated with this position will be performed through a combination of onsite work and telecommuting. Employees will have access to shared workspaces at various King County facilities. Employees must reside in Washington state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements. King County has a robust collection of tools and resources to support when working remotely.

Work Schedule

The normal work week for this position is Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Alternative work schedules may be considered. This position is FLSA Exempt and is not eligible for overtime pay.
