Senior Construction Accounting Manager / Full-Charge Bookkeeper
Kings C Steel Works is seeking a highly skilled, autonomous Senior Construction Accounting Manager / Full-Charge Bookkeeper to lead our financial operations. This pivotal role combines advanced corporate accounting expertise with hands-on construction financial management, ensuring absolute accuracy, compliance, and fiscal integrity across all structural steel projects and company operations.
The ideal candidate will bring a proactive approach to rebuilding and streamlining our financial workflows. You will take full ownership of the general ledger, optimize cash flow, ensure strict NYC/NYS construction compliance, and supervise an incoming Assistant Bookkeeper. This position offers an exciting opportunity to act as the primary financial anchor in a fast-paced, growth-oriented trade contracting environment.
Duties & ResponsibilitiesFinancial Oversight & General Ledger
- Full-Cycle Accounting: Oversee all aspects of general ledger accounting, including regular balance sheet reconciliations, journal entries, and accurate month-end and year-end closing procedures.
- Financial Reporting: Prepare detailed, GAAP-compliant financial reports—including budgets, WIP (Work-in-Progress) statements, forecasts, and cash-flow analyses—directly for the company Principal to support strategic decision-making.
- Cash Management: Lead cash management activities, including aggressive forecasting of cash flow needs, liquidity optimization, and monitoring project-specific funding requirements.
- Audit Readiness: Maintain impeccable financial documentation to support internal reviews and seamlessly coordinate external audits (including mandatory Workers’ Comp and General Liability insurance audits).
Construction-Specific Project Accounting
- AIA Progress Billing: Manage full-cycle contract billings utilizing AIA G702 and G703 progress billing formats, managing the schedule of values, tracking multi-tier project retainage, and executing necessary lien waivers/releases.
- Change Order Management: Collaborate with Project Managers to review, financially code, log, and accurately recognize revenue for all contract modifications and change orders.
- Job Costing: Audit and ensure the precise allocation of project expenses, tracking structural steel material procurement, shop fabrication labor, and field installation costs against project budgets.
Processing, Compliance & Leadership
- Payroll & Taxes: Supervise comprehensive payroll functions, ensuring accuracy in field and shop employee compensation, union/prevailing wage requirements (where applicable), and timely federal, state, and local tax filings.
- Accounts Control: Manage the accounts payable and accounts receivable frameworks, overseeing the incoming assistant to guarantee timely vendor payments, material backup verification, and proactive collections.
- Team Leadership: Direct, train, and delegate transactional accounting and office administration tasks to the Assistant Bookkeeper, ensuring high organizational effectiveness.
- System Optimization: Evaluate and implement efficiency improvements within our accounting software (QuickBooks/Sage) and project tracking workflows.
Skills & QualificationsTechnical Expertise
- Accounting Standards: Extensive knowledge of GAAP, double-entry bookkeeping, debits & credits, account analysis, and rigorous balance sheet management.
- Construction Finance: Deep understanding of construction-specific technical accounting issues, including revenue recognition principles (Completed Contract vs. Percentage of Completion), lien laws, and contract retainage management.
- Software Proficiency: Expert proficiency with construction accounting platforms (e.g., QuickBooks Desktop/Online, Sage, or Foundation) and advanced command of MS Excel for complex financial modeling.
Core Experience & Requirements
- Experience: Minimum 5–7 years of full-charge bookkeeping or accounting experience, with at least 3 years of dedicated experience in commercial construction or subcontractor accounting.
- Education: Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a highly related business field.
- Leadership: Proven ability to lead a department, manage an assistant, and navigate tight financial deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Language: Fluent in English (Required).
- Location: Ability to reliably commute to our office in Brooklyn, NY 11237 (Required).
