Assistant Teacher/Floater

Position Overview

The Assistant Teacher partners closely with the Lead Teacher to support classroom structure, supervision, and curriculum implementation. This role plays a key part in maintaining a consistent, responsive, and well-regulated classroom environment.

Assistant Teachers are active contributors to classroom leadership and are expected to step into decision-making, support behavior in real time, and maintain supervision standards throughout the day. This role may assume full classroom responsibility in the absence of the Lead Teacher.

This is a hands-on, high-engagement position requiring strong awareness, initiative, and the ability remain calm and effective in a fast-paced environment.

What to Expect in This Role

This is a structured but highly active classroom environment where flexibility and responsiveness are essential.

In this role, you will regularly:

• Support children through a wide range of behaviors and emotional needs, including dysregulation, conflict, and difficulty with transitions
• Work in environments that are often busy, loud, and require constant movement and awareness
• Balance supervision, engagement, and task completion simultaneously
• Step into leadership moments when needed, including guiding small groups or managing transitions
• Adjust plans in real time based on children’s needs and classroom dynamics
• Collaborate closely with the Lead Teacher while also working independently when required

This role requires strong emotional regulation, sound judgment, and the ability to remain steady and responsive under pressure.

Employment Details

• Hourly position
• $18.00–$19.50 per hour
• Reports to: Lead Teacher and Directors

Minimum Qualifications

• Minimum age: 18
• Enrollment in the Central Background Registry (CBR)
• Pediatric First Aid/CPR and Food Handler certification
• Completion of required Oregon orientation and annual training (15 hours minimum per year)
• ORO Step 5 or equivalent training

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working in a licensed early childhood classroom
• Experience supporting children with diverse learning or behavioral needs

Key Responsibilities

• Support active supervision and safety of children at all times
• Co-plan and assist in implementing developmentally appropriate curriculum
• Lead small groups or activities as assigned
• Support and respond to children’s behavior using positive guidance strategies
• Maintain classroom organization, documentation, and daily routines
• Build positive, professional relationships with children and families
• Model professionalism and provide guidance to Aide staff
• Step into classroom leadership when needed, including during Lead Teacher’s absence

Physical Requirements

• Ability to bend, twist, stretch, kneel, and crouch
• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
• Ability to remain active throughout the day
• Ability to supervise indoor and outdoor activities
