Summary/Objective: Performs and coordinates skilled maintenance and repair work for the City’s Fleet Services Division. Inspects, diagnoses, services, and repairs City vehicles, heavy equipment, emergency vehicles, and small equipment. Conducts preventive maintenance, responds to field service calls, coordinates parts procurement, maintains accurate repair records, and performs other related duties as assigned.

Examples of Duties / Knowledge & Skills

  • Inspects, diagnoses, repairs, and maintains various City vehicles and equipment, including automobiles, trucks, trailers, police vehicles, fire apparatus, ambulances, public works equipment, and heavy equipment.
  • Maintains and repairs generators, pumps, chainsaws, and other small engines or specialized equipment.
  • Inspects vehicles and equipment and completes necessary repairs to ensure safe and reliable operation.
  • Schedules, coordinates, and performs preventive maintenance on vehicles, equipment, mechanical systems, and related components.
  • Diagnoses and troubleshoots mechanical problems involving engines, transmissions, brakes, steering, suspension, air-conditioning, and electrical, hydraulic, fuel, and cooling systems.
  • Performs major and minor mechanical repairs, including repairing or replacing pumps, radiators, alternators, starters, differentials, timing components, belts, hoses, fuses, valves, batteries, and other parts.
  • Uses computerized diagnostic equipment, scan tools, testing devices, hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment.
  • Responds to service calls and retrieves, diagnoses, or repairs disabled vehicles and equipment in the field.
  • Enters labor, parts, inspection, and repair information into the City’s fleet maintenance system.
  • Prepares, updates, and maintains accurate preventive-maintenance, inspection, and repair records.
  • Communicates with supervisors, equipment operators, vendors, and parts suppliers regarding repairs, parts availability, costs, and estimated completion times.
  • Locates parts and assists with or coordinates the purchase of parts, materials, tools, and supplies.
  • Maintains an organized, clean, and safe shop, work area, tools, and equipment.
  • Follows applicable safety procedures and properly handles fuels, oils, refrigerants, batteries, chemicals, and other regulated materials.
  • May provide technical assistance or guidance to less-experienced employees.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or required.

Preferred Qualifications

Minimum qualifications & Requirements

  • Three or more years of experience repairing and maintaining vehicles and heavy equipment.
  • Experience working on diesel engines, fire apparatuses, emergency vehicles, hydraulic equipment, or public works equipment.
  • ASE certifications in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or emergency vehicle repair.
  • Experience using computerized fleet-management and vehicle-diagnostic systems.
  • Commercial Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one within a timeframe established by the City.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of automotive, diesel, and heavy-equipment maintenance and repair practices.
  • Knowledge of engines, transmissions, brakes, steering, suspension, and electrical, hydraulic, cooling, fuel, and air-conditioning systems.
  • Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and determine appropriate repairs.
  • Ability to safely operate diagnostic devices, shop equipment, hand tools, and power tools.
  • Ability to read and interpret service manuals, wiring diagrams, technical specifications, and maintenance schedules.
  • Ability to maintain accurate repair, inspection, labor, and parts records.
  • Ability to prioritize assignments and complete work with limited supervision.
  • Ability to communicate professionally with employees, supervisors, vendors, and suppliers.

Required Education And Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two years of experience repairing and maintaining automobiles, trucks, heavy equipment, or comparable mechanical systems.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
  • Must possess a valid Texas driver’s license and maintain an acceptable driving record.
  • Must obtain at least one Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification within one year of employment.
  • Must obtain an approved refrigerant-handling certification within 12 months of employment.
  • Texas Department of Public Safety Vehicle Inspector certification is preferred.
  • Additional ASE certifications or ASE Master certification are preferred and may be required for placement at the higher end of the position’s salary range.

Supplemental information

Physical Demands & Work Environment

Work is performed in a maintenance shop and in field environments. The position requires sitting, standing, walking, bending, reaching, kneeling, crouching, crawling, twisting, and climbing under, over, or onto vehicles and equipment. The employee must regularly lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds and may occasionally move heavier objects with assistance or mechanical equipment.

The employee may be exposed to variable weather conditions, moving vehicles, dangerous machinery, elevated noise levels, exhaust fumes, refrigerants, welding activities, oils, grease, fuel, batteries, and hazardous chemicals or materials. Appropriate personal protective equipment must be worn as required.
