The Keweenaw Economic Development Alliance (KEDA) seeks a Business Retention & Outreach Specialist to join their team in Houghton, Michigan. This is an exceptional opportunity to support and strengthen the businesses that power our local economy. In this role, you’ll spend your days visiting with business owners across the Keweenaw, listening to their needs, and helping them access the tools, connections, and opportunities that help them succeed. You’ll also represent KEDA at community events and work closely with our partner organizations to make sure businesses feel supported every step of the way.
WHAT WE OFFER.
- $21 - $25 per hour starting pay.

- Full-time Monday – Friday 8:00am - 5:00pm with schedule flexibility available. Candidates must have ability to attend occasional evening meetings as needed.
WHAT YOU WILL DO.
- Visit area businesses to learn about their challenges and opportunities.
- Connect businesses with the right programs and partners (MEDC, Michigan Works!, SBDC, APEX, and more).
- Track and document progress in KEDA’s business database.
- Build relationships through outreach, follow-ups, and ongoing support.
- Market and promote KEDA programs and resources to the business community.
- Represent KEDA at public events and in conversations that shape our local economy.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR.
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Communications, Economics, or a related field (or an equivalent combination of education, training and relevant experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to be successful in this position).
- At least 5 years of experience in business or economic development, operations, customer service, or program management.
- Knowledge of how small businesses run—from finances and operations, to growth strategies.
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills—you’re approachable, a good listener, and a natural connector.
- An understanding of financial analysis, lending practices, and how land use and real estate impact business growth.
- A positive and versatile nature able to absorb information quickly, and solve problems as they arise.
