DESCRIPTION OF BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the direction of the Director of Special Education, the Speech and Language Pathologist provides specialized therapy, instruction, consultation, and services for students who have disorders of language and speech, social pragmatics; performs speech and language assessments; assists in developing the Individualized Educational Program for students with language and speech disorders; consults and collaborates with teachers and parents regarding strategies which enable access to and progress in the general education curriculum. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Consults with teachers and parents regarding typical speech and language development, including hearing, voice, and fluency, classroom modifications, and/or accommodations. Assists in the referral process, if necessary, and evaluates the effects of a speech or language disorder on a pupil's educational performance and academic achievement. Organizes identified students into therapeutic groups and provides a therapeutic program designed to address speech and language goals. Conducts ongoing evaluations for qualified students and makes periodic reports of progress on students' Individualized Education Plans and reviews and revises students' intervention programs as necessary. Attends planning meetings for individual students, providing expertise as needed in the area of speech and language, as well as input on student performance and recommendations for interventions in the area of speech and language. Completes required student assessment plans, initial evaluations, additional assessments, and reevaluations within district, state, and federal guidelines and develops legally compliant IEPs and assessment reports. Maintains appropriate documentation required by law (i.e. assessment reports, IEPs, registers, therapy/progress notes, data collection on goals, etc.).
