Survey Technician – Job Description (Office-Based / Data Processing)
Position Overview
The Survey Technician will support our surveying and engineering teams through office-based data processing, drafting, and production of survey deliverables. This position focuses on converting field-collected data into accurate maps, exhibits, and technical drawings used for engineering design, permitting, and project planning. The role works closely with our Professional Land Surveyors, CAD technicians, and project managers.
Key Responsibilities
- Process raw field data collected from GPS, total stations, scanners, and digital levels.
- Review field notes, coding, and linework to ensure accuracy and consistency with project standards.
- Create survey base maps, surfaces, and point files using AutoCAD Civil 3D or similar software.
- Draft boundary surveys, ALTA surveys, easement exhibits, topographic surveys, and utility mapping.
- Perform deed and plat research, validating property boundaries and legal descriptions.
- Assist in assembling final survey deliverables, including PDFs, CAD files, point tables, and supporting documents.
- Identify inconsistencies or missing information and coordinate with field crews to resolve issues.
- Maintain organized digital project files following company standards and QA/QC procedures.
- Support design teams by providing accurate existing-condition drawings and survey backgrounds.
Qualifications
- 1–3 years of experience in survey data processing or CAD drafting preferred; highly motivated entry-level candidates will also be considered.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D (preferred), Carlson Survey, or equivalent survey drafting software.
- Strong understanding of survey fundamentals, coordinate systems, and field-to-finish workflows.
- Ability to read and interpret plats, deeds, utility records, aerial imagery, and construction documents.
- Excellent attention to detail with the ability to produce clean, accurate, and organized drawings.
- Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate with field crews and engineers.
- Highly organized, able to manage multiple projects, deadlines, and file structures.
Preferred Skills
- Experience processing GPS RTK and static data, total station files, and level loops.
- Familiarity with survey adjustment principles and least-squares workflows.
- Experience with utility locating/GPR datasets is a plus.
- Exposure to LiDAR or drone data processing is beneficial but not required.
Work Environment
- This is a primarily office-based position with little to no fieldwork.
- Collaborates regularly with survey crews, designers, and project managers.
- Standard business hours with occasional extended hours depending on project deadlines.
