BOOKKEEPER
DEFINITION
Under general supervision, to perform a wide variety of clerical functions of average difficulty involving the preparation and maintenance of financial or statistical records; and to do other related work as required.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Gathers, assembles, tabulates, checks, and files financial and statistical data; keeps financial records and processes documents involved in financial transactions; does financial posting; makes arithmetical calculations; checks invoices against purchase orders; makes and verifies extensions and computes discounts and sales tax; keeps expense ledger accounts; assists in preparing financial statements; types purchase orders; keeps ledger accounts, balancing such accounts, checking and correcting irregularities; makes bank deposits; assists in making financial and statistical reports of records and accounts maintained; assists in the preparation and maintenance of the employee benefits program; assists in the preparation of state ADA reporting; files records and receipts; performs other related work as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Basic methods and practices of financial record keeping;
Modern office methods, procedures and techniques;
Appropriate English usage, spelling, grammar, punctuation and arithmetic concepts;
Standard office machines and equipment;
Record storage, retrieval and management systems.
Ability to:
Perform arithmetical calculations with speed and accuracy;
Learn and apply office policies, rules and procedures rapidly;
Prepare and maintain accurate and complete records and reports;
Understand and carry out oral and written instructions without immediate supervision;
Meet the public tactfully and answer questions courteously over the counter and by telephone;
Type at a net corrected speed of 40 words per minute;
Maintain accurate records of warehouse inventory;
Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships;
Communicate effectively in oral and written form.
Experience:
One year of paid experience preferred in general clerical work, involving financial record-keeping activities.
Education:
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade, including or supplemented by training or coursework in financial recordkeeping, record management.
