Maintenance Manager (Director of Maintenance) - BRTA        

Salary Range: $70,000 - $74,049

Knowledge and Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years of vehicle, equipment, and hydraulic maintenance experience
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience as a Maintenance Manager role in a Transit environment
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have a valid MA driver license, CDL preferred
  • Ability to work without direct supervision.
  • Ability to read, write and speak English.
  • Union and contract negotiation experience
  • Ability to work flexible schedules that may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Computer literate.

Key Accountabilities:  

Leadership & Strategy

  • Develop and implement the overall maintenance strategy for fleet and facilities to ensure safe, reliable transit operations
  • Provide leadership and direction to maintenance supervisors, and technical teams
  • Establish performance goals, KPIs, and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Foster a culture of safety, accountability, and operational excellence
  • Lead the Union relationship by understanding and monitoring compliance to the ratified CBA.
    •  Manage union relationships to be productive and enable win-win outcomes
    • Other duties as assigned

Fleet & Facility Maintenance

  • Oversee preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance programs for buses, and non-revenue equipment
  • Ensure all assets meet safety, regulatory, and manufacturer standards
  • Manage maintenance schedules to maximize fleet availability and service reliability
  • Oversee maintenance of support facilities, shops, and equipment

Operational Performance

  • Monitor and analyze maintenance performance metrics such as mean distance between failures (MDBF), asset availability, and on-time performance
  • Identify trends and implement improvement plans to optimize reliability and reduce downtime
  • Drive root cause analysis and corrective action programs

Budget & Financial Management

  • Develop and manage annual maintenance operating and capital budgets
  • Optimize labor, materials, inventory, and vendor costs
  • Oversee procurement of parts, tools, and services

Compliance & Safety

  • Ensure compliance with Federal Transit Administration (FTA), DOT, OSHA, and other regulatory requirements
  • Maintain and enforce safety programs and procedures
  • Lead incident investigations and implement corrective actions

Vendor & Contract Management

  • Manage relationships with OEMs, suppliers, and third-party maintenance providers
  • Oversee contracts for parts, services, and outsourced work
  • Ensure vendor performance meets service level expectations

Technology & Systems

  • Oversee the use and optimization of Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS)
  • Leverage data analytics and emerging technologies to improve maintenance efficiency
  • Support implementation of new systems, tools, and fleet technologies (e.g., electrification)

  • Long periods (potentially exceeding 8 hours per day) of walking, standing, sitting, bending, pushing, pulling, climbing, lifting, balancing, stooping, twisting, squatting, handling materials, repetitive hand-wrist motions, and traversing uneven surfaces;
  • Exposure to both extreme heat and cold;
  • Exposure to loud noises, fumes, and airborne particles;

In addition to the above demands inherent in every role, the following roles may entail unique physical demands, including:

  • Operators/Drivers may work inside or outside vehicles and may operate vehicles for over 8 hours per day.
  • Operations Supervisors and Managers may split their work between an office setting looking at a computer screen/electronic device and active transit field locations driving in a vehicle.
  • Maintenance Employees may be exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals in a ventilated maintenance shop and may work with personal computers, laptops, electronic hand-held devices, complex electrical schematics, diagnostic software and testing devices, and other heavy machinery.
  • Office Staff may work indoors in air-conditioned or well-ventilated facilities, including offices and cubicle spaces equipped with a telephone and computer and may entail typing or looking at a computer screen.
