Assistant Coach
Classification: Exempt staff
Supervisor: Head Coach
Position Summary:
The Assistant Coach is responsible for assisting the Head Coach with all activities associated with operating a successful NCAA Division II program in the sport.
Job Functions:
- Assist with the instruction of student athletes in the sport.
- Plan and prepare for athlete instruction.
- Teach the rules and fundamentals of the sport as needed.
- Teach skill development.
- Teach game-specific strategies.
- Instruct athletes in practices sessions, during competitions, in team meetings, and in one-on-one sessions.
- Evaluate student learning through direct questioning, behavior, and performance.
- Assist with the instruction of student athletes on sport-related topics, including personal health, wellness, fitness, team-building, and safety.
- Follow an academic support plan for student athletes.
- Follow the Athletics Department Academic Policy.
- Review and respond to Academic Alerts as requested.
- Assist with the recruitment and retention of potential student athletes in order to obtain and maintain the College’s squad size requirements.
- Supervise volunteers and student workers (when applicable).
- Assist the Head Coach in fulfilling his/her duties.
- Attend practices and competitions.
- Assist with program game-management as needed.
- Assist with and participate in Athletic Department fundraising activities as requested.
- Follow the rules and regulations of the College (including the Athletics Department Policies and Procedures Manual, the College Employee Handbook, and the Business Office Policies and Procedures), the NCAA, and the applicable conference.
- Assist with the maintenance of sport facilities and equipment as requested.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Position Qualifications:
- Previous coaching experience (college-level coaching experience preferred).
- Bachelor’s degree (master’s preferred) or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of skills, techniques, and strategies of the sport.
- Certified in First Aid, CPR, AED.
- Appropriate sport licensing when applicable.
- Effective interpersonal communication and relationship skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively and enthusiastically with others.
- Ability to think critically and solve problems.
