Position Overview:
We are seeking a highly analytical and detail-oriented Mechanical Estimator specializing in piping systems to join our pre-construction team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for preparing accurate, competitive, and comprehensive cost estimates for commercial and industrial mechanical piping projects. This role requires deep technical knowledge of piping systems (including HVAC, process piping, and plumbing), strong relationship-building skills with vendors, subcontractors, owners, and General Contractors, and the ability to thrive in a deadline-driven environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Take-Offs & Cost Estimation
- Perform accurate and detailed quantity take-offs for all piping systems, including chilled water, heating water, steam, condenser water, process piping, refrigerant systems, and plumbing.
- Analyze blueprints, 3D models, specifications, addenda, and contract documents to determine project scope and requirements.
- Calculate labor hours, material quantities, and equipment costs using industry-standard productivity rates and historical data.
Bidding & Procurement
- Identify, solicit, and evaluate quotes from material suppliers, equipment vendors, and subcontractors.
- Review vendor scopes of work to ensure complete coverage without overlaps or gaps.
- Prepare detailed bid proposals, cost breakdowns, and technical clarifications for client submission.
Project Collaboration
- Attend pre-bid meetings, site walkthroughs, and post-bid interviews to assess site conditions and present proposals.
- Collaborate closely with Project Managers, field superintendents, and the engineering team to transition awarded projects from estimating to execution.
- Assist in constructability reviews, value engineering, and identifying potential project risks or cost-saving opportunities.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Experience: Minimum of 10 years of professional estimating experience in the mechanical contracting industry, with a primary focus on commercial and industrial piping. Field experience as a pipefitter or mechanical superintendent is highly preferred.
- Technical Expertise: Strong working knowledge of mechanical and plumbing codes, ASME standards, MCAA Labor book, and diverse piping materials/joining methods (e.g., welded, grooved, threaded, soldered).
- Software Proficiency: Hands-on experience with industry-standard estimating software like Trimble AutoBid Mechanical and digital take-off tools (e.g., Bluebeam Revu).
- Analytical Skills: Exceptional mathematical capability and the ability to interpret complex technical drawings and specifications.
- Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills for negotiating with vendors, clarifying scopes, and drafting proposals.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with Design-Build and Design-Assist project delivery methods.
- Familiarity with Navisworks or Revit for utilizing 3D models in the estimating process.
- Existing relationships with regional mechanical and plumbing supply houses and subcontractors.
- Existing relationships with owners and GCs.
- Microsoft Office suite proficiency
