Reporting to the Director of Library Services, this regular, full-time, tenure-track faculty position works 190 days per contract year, with evenings and occasional weekends. Regular hours for this position will be Monday - Thursday 10 a.m. - 7 p.m., and Friday 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. and are subject to change as determined by college needs and approved by the Director.


Occasional travel to other KCC instructional sites in the service region may be expected to provide instructional support services.


Regular on-campus presence is expected for all KCC employees. Any flexible and/or hybrid work schedules are subject for review, approval, and/or change based on the needs of the College.


Position Summary

The Librarian for Public Services and Outreach provides dynamic, student-centered library services that advance teaching, learning, and community engagement. Serving as a primary point of contact at the Information Desk and through virtual reference, this position delivers high-quality research assistance, technology support, and individualized instruction to a diverse population of students, faculty, staff, and community patrons. The librarian develops subject-specific research guides, supports Allied Health programs as a liaison, and collaborates with faculty to integrate information literacy into the curriculum through in-person, remote, and embedded instruction, with a strong focus on student success, retention, and completion.


In addition to instructional and reference responsibilities, this role leads and supports library outreach and engagement initiatives, creating programs, events, and digital content that promote library resources and services on campus and in the community.



Physical Demands

The job responsibilities are performed in an office area and presentation venues, on main campus and regional centers. Travel by car required. The job has intermittent periods during which continuous physical exertion is required, such as independent mobility between work areas, standing, sitting, stooping, bending, climbing, lifting material or equipment, some of which may be heavy or awkward (8 - 45 pounds). Typically requires regular use of one or more physical senses of medium intensity and long duration. Must meet reasonable deadlines, quotas or demands for accuracy, and may be involved in some mildly unpleasant situations.


Minimum Qualifications


  1. American Library Association (ALA)-accredited master's degree in library/information science-at the time of application, attach unofficial transcript
  2. Ability to understand and respond to the service and learning needs of a diverse population of community college students
  3. Ability to demonstrate effective communication skills for in-person, written and online (chat, video, virtual meeting) communication
  4. Ability to work within a team and collaborate with others across teams and departments
  5. Ability to use and instruct others in the use of printers, computers, and programs including Microsoft Office applications, virtual communication platforms and library databases
  6. Ability to work independently during evening shifts




Preferred but not Required


  1. Experience providing reference assistance with digital and print resources in a library or similar educational setting
  2. Demonstrated knowledge of current trends and best practices of information literacy instruction in academic libraries
  3. Demonstrated knowledge of resources and research practices in Allied Health or Health Sciences




Proposed Salary

Job Duties


Essential Function: REFERENCE AND INFORMATION SERVICES


Description:

  • Provide students, faculty, staff, and community patrons with research, reference, and information assistance using the library's online catalog, databases, guides, and other print or online resources.
  • Assist students, faculty, staff, and community patrons in the use of Computer Commons equipment, computers, software and library technology.
  • Staff the library Information Desk in regularly assigned shifts, including weeknight closing shifts, Monday - Thursday.
  • Staff the Virtual Reference service with other librarians in regularly assigned shifts.
  • Interact and communicate effectively with the College's diverse population of students in-person, by phone, email, virtual chat and virtual meeting to provide individualized and engaged learning, contributing to student retention and completion.
  • Develop and maintain online research guides and support materials in Allied Health and other assigned subject areas.
  • Participate in assessment for library information services and collections.


Essential Function: COMMUNITY OUTREACH


  • Description:Organize library resources displays and conduct library outreach activities in collaboration with librarians and staff.
  • Create content highlighting library services and resources for social media.
  • Coordinate budget and grant proposals, guest speakers and marketing requests for library hosted events.
  • Maintain connections with appropriate departments and community organizations for collaborative events.
  • Conduct assessment of outreach programs and submits reports to the Director of Library Services.
  • Participate in campus outreach events and serves as a representative of the library for outreach or other projects as assigned.

  • Essential Function: INFORMATION LITERACY INSTRUCTION AND SUPPORT


    • Description:Serve as the library liaison to Allied Health and other assigned subject areas.
    • Prepare lesson plans and assignments in collaboration with teaching faculty to instruct students in information literacy and research methods.
    • Provide in-person or remote instruction according to the class's delivery method.
    • Serve as an embedded librarian in Moodle classes at the instructor's request.
    • Assess the impact of instructional sessions on student learning and adapts teaching in response to student and instructor feedback.
    • Demonstrate proficiency with software and systems used for instructional delivery support, including MS Teams, Zoom, Moodle and LibApps.


    Essential Function: COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT AND MAINTENANCE


    • Description:Maintain a current knowledge of the resources available to support general teaching and learning, as well as in-depth knowledge of resources in Allied Health and other assigned subject areas.
    • Collaborate with librarians and staff for the development of print and media collections; encourage and evaluate purchase recommendations from faculty and students in assigned subject areas.
    • Select materials for purchase in coordination with the Technical Services Specialist and Library Services Director.
    • Participate with other librarians and library staff in collection reorganization deaccessioning projects.


    Essential Function: KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES


    • Description:Possess ability to understand and comply with KCC's and Morris Library's polices as well as follow the professional standards and relevant best practices for academic librarians.
    • Demonstrate ability to provide general research assistance and instruction in accordance with ACRL's Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education.
    • Maintain knowledge of emerging trends in technology and education, as well as interest or abilities relevant to the literacy and instruction of digital, media or AI technologies.
    • Demonstrate expertise using biomedical and research databases with advanced knowledge of resources, trends and issues in health sciences.
    • Demonstrate excellent communication skills and knowledge of best practices for social media engagement and library outreach.

  • Essential Function: FACULTY SERVICE


    • Description:Participate in the shared governance of the College as a member of faculty, serve on appropriate college committees and other entities; present at meetings and events as requested.
    • Maintain active service or leadership commitments in local, state and national professional organizations.
