Reporting to the Assistant Director of Transitions & Community Living, the Community Director provides oversight for one or more residence halls, facilitates a well-rounded Community Living educational curriculum, and ensures the safety and well-being of all residents. The Community Director is a live-in member of the community and works a variable schedule including evenings, holidays, weekends, and campus closures.

Duties/Responsibilities

Staffing (25%)

  • Trains, supervises, and evaluates 8 – 12 undergraduate Community Assistants (CA’s) in their response to the needs of 20 – 50 residents each.
  • Plans and implements activities that serve as on-the training and that promote opportunities for personal growth and development for a diverse paraprofessional student staff team.
  • Evaluates the performance of CAs in the areas established by the Community Living team with established procedures
  • Supports the Transitions and Community Living team with administrative operations as necessary
  • Assists in the departmental and community processes designed to effectively select, orient, and train student staff
  • Participates in professional development activities and programs that provide personal growth and career opportunities

Student Support and Community Development (25%)

  • Participates in the management of student behavioral needs and issues in the residence halls by responding to incidents, meeting with students, and pursuing appropriate administrative or student conduct actions
  • Serve as a community standards hearing officer responsible for facilitating developmental conversations, administering sanctions, and follow-up as needed
  • Provides consultation and referral for students on residential matters (i.e., mediation of interpersonal conflicts, providing relevant information, interpreting policies and procedures)
  • Oversee the occupancy management of the assigned area/building including room changes, health and safety inspections, emotional support animals, roster verification, and damage billing
  • Serve as liaison with maintenance and custodial services, provide follow-up for maintenance requests as needed
  • Provides support and leadership to the transitions team, specific to first year student experience through open house, admitted student days, orientation and welcome days

Crisis Management (25%)

  • Participate in an on-call duty rotation serving as a first responder and assist with crisis management, intervention and emergency response
  • Respond and manage crisis situations and provide appropriate support and followup for students and staff involved in crisis or emergency situations

Campus Partner Collaboration (15%)

  • Participate in college committees and initiatives that enhance the residential experience
  • Serve as a member of the CAREs team providing outreach and support to students
  • Attend all departmental and divisional retreats and meetings
  • Collaborate with various campus departments to support student success and community engagement including but not limited to Campus Safety, Dean of Students Office, Athletics, The Wellness Center, and faculty.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned or required to meet Transitions and Community Living goals and objectives

Summer Conference Management (10%)

  • Assist with supervision of a team of Summer Housing Assistants – including weekly team meetings, individual meetings, and consistent communication with team members
  • Assist conference team with design and implementation of comprehensive and ongoing training
  • Manage staffing schedule including Summer Housing Assistants nightly duty coverage and guest service periods including check in and check out
  • Serve as part of the professional staff on-call duty rotation
  • Manage higher level summer housing concerns and emergencies
  • Submit detailed occupancy rosters for client billing
  • Collaborate with Assistant Director of Community Living and the facilities team to achieve timely room set-ups and turnover
  • Actively listen in order to respond appropriately to conference guests, vendors, university administration/leadership

Requirements

Minimum Acceptable Education & Experience:

  • A master’s degree in student Affairs, Higher Education, or related field
  • Experience supervising student staff
  • Two years of recent live-in experience within a residential life/housing program (undergraduate, graduate, or professional).

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Staff Supervision
  • Creating, developing, and assessing educational and social programming for students
  • Residence Hall facility administration
  • Demonstrated ability to interact with a wide variety of constituencies including students, families, faculty, and staff
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Microsoft Excel, and current social media platforms
  • Prior usage of housing management and conduct software such as Maxient, Star Rez, Workday Student, Navigate
  • Proven written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience with Student Conduct

Compensation Pay Range

$35,568.00 - $61,950.00
