Position Summary
The Seasonal Shelter Support Specialist plays a critical role in maintaining a safe, welcoming, and well-functioning environment for guests accessing KBEC’s Severe Weather Shelters. This position requires strong interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and the ability to respond effectively to emergencies and guest needs. Staff will work collaboratively with shelter leadership to ensure compliance with agency protocols and District of Columbia standards.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
To perform this role successfully, the individual must be able to execute each duty with professionalism and care:
- Collaborate with the Site Coordinator, Program Manager, and team members to ensure smooth shelter operations
- Conduct comprehensive intake screenings and enter data into approved systems (e.g., HMIS, DHS Smart Sheets)
- Ensure the safety and security of guests, staff, volunteers, and visitors through regular internal and external perimeter checks
- Respond promptly and appropriately to emergencies in accordance with KBEC and DHS protocols
- Facilitate new resident orientation and clearly communicate shelter rules and expectations
- Provide trauma-informed support and respond to guest needs with empathy and professionalism
- Serve meals during shift in accordance with Food Safety Manager certification (ServSafe and DC DOH required)
- Participate in regular supervision and provide timely updates to shelter leadership
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation of incidents, services, and guest interactions
- Support shelter cleanliness and upkeep, including sweeping, mopping, laundry, and assisting maintenance staff
- Conduct hourly safety checks on all residents and document updates using shelter software
- Collaborate with volunteers, contractors, and donors to support shelter operations
- Complete all required training and maintain current knowledge of shelter systems and procedures

Technical Requirements
- Must possess basic computer skills and be able to provide hourly updates using shelter software platforms
- Familiarity with Google Suite, HMIS, and other data systems preferred

Qualifications & Requirements
Education & Experience
Candidates must meet one of the following:
- High school diploma or Associate’s degree with at least one (1) year of related experience
- Bachelor’s degree in any field (preferably in human services or a related discipline)
Preferred experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Homeless Shelter Support staff
- Customer service
- Direct Support Professional (DSP) roles with elderly or developmentally disabled populations
- Hospitality (e.g., hotel or front desk operations)
- Residential services or shelter programs
- Security or safety services
Certifications & Clearances
- Food Handler Certification required (ServSafe and DC DOH)
- CPR/First Aid certification preferred; must be willing to obtain if not currently certified
- Must successfully complete all background checks upon hire, including:
- TB test
- CJIS (FBI) clearance
- DC Police clearance (or municipality in which you live)
- Drug/Alcohol Screening
- Health and wellness screening by a licensed provider
Additional Requirements
- Oral and written fluency in English required; bilingual skills in Spanish, French Creole, or Farsi preferred
- Ability to work flexible hours, including overnight and weekend shifts as part of a 24-hour on-call system
- Must remain awake and alert during all scheduled work hours
- Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds
- Capacity to respond to physical emergencies, including evacuations and behavioral health incidents
Job Types: Part-time, Temporary
Pay: $17.95 - $18.70 per hour
Expected hours: 40 per week
