Kauai Island Utility Cooperative is looking for a Financial Analyst.
This position requires the incumbent to be physically on-site. Applicants must be authorized to work for ANY employer in the United States. We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa at this time.
Kauai Island Utility Cooperative (KIUC) is an award winning and dynamic not-for-profit electric cooperative. Formed in 2002, KIUC is an industry leader in the transformation to a clean and modern renewable energy future. Member-owned, the cooperative is focused on improving the quality of life for its 34,000 members and is one of 900 electric co-ops serving more than 40 million members in 47 states. KIUC may be relatively small in size, but its bold leadership in renewable innovation has had an enormous positive impact on the global transition to 100% clean energy. KIUC has led utilities in the State of Hawaii in both reliability and renewable production for the past two years.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Provides timely and accurate financial reports and variance analysis as required to prepare, support, and analyze financial forecasts and the annual budget.
  • Create dashboards to give Senior Management a concise and clear view of all business activities as needed.
  • Assists with cooperative contingency planning and business continuity efforts.
  • Designs, builds, and implements standard risk assessments, business impact analysis, and other business continuity tools and capabilities (e.g., return on investment (ROI), cost/benefit analysis, time-motion studies, etc.).
  • Maintains and administers the company's fleet management program. Coordinates activities with respective stakeholders (e.g., scheduled maintenance and safety checks).
  • Develops and implements risk metrics, methodologies, dashboards, and monitoring analysis that includes reports on financial risk exposure and trend analysis.
  • Researches, collects data, and analyzes effectiveness for various types of business activities.
  • Focus on continuous improvement of processes and data quality.
  • Creates custom reporting where applicable.
  • Assists with contract review to determine if terms and conditions are in KIUC's best interest and if terms and conditions are being met (i.e., insurance requirements). Assists with development of procedures for the proper execution of contracts to effectively minimize KIUC exposure to litigation. Assists to ensure that any special provisions, certification, clauses, etc., required by federal or state agency regulations are adhered to, with responsibility for their correct preparation and distribution.
  • Utilizes learned system knowledge to review current processes that affect interface data into forecasting models and helps to develop new processes that may enhance the results of financial forecasts. May include communication and coordination with other departments.
  • Implement system enhancements to NISC and other various supporting systems as needed.
  • Assists with daily, month-end, and year-end accounting processes.
  • Responsible for preparing monthly account reconciliations to the general ledger as assigned.
  • Works in tandem with various departments to accomplish strategic goals as assigned.
  • Leads analysis to support all departments in finding and implementing cost savings and/or efficiencies.
  • Performs other financial analysis and assists the Financial & Corporate Services department with other related duties and projects as required.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or Business Administration with emphasis in accounting, or any equivalent combination of education and experience required.
  • Experience in general accounting and/or analytics preferred.
  • Information systems, data management, or continuous improvement experience preferred.
  • Knowledge in electric utility industry and cooperatives preferred.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, most notably Excel, required.
  • Familiarity with other reporting/database programs preferred.
  • Develop understanding of automated financial systems and PC applications.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and emotional intelligence skills.
  • Ability to work with others in a positive manner and respectful atmosphere.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), accounting theory, and the ability to apply accounting theory to financial transactions.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of internal control functions and cash management practices.
  • Develop understanding of Rural Utility Services (RUS) accounting policies and reporting requirements, electric utility industry accounting practices, and regulatory reporting.
  • Familiarity with State of Hawaii PUC regulatory requirements as it relates to tariff issues and financial reporting preferred.
  • Must be detail-oriented and possess strong organizational skills to handle multiple priorities effectively.
  • Must be able to handle private, sensitive, and confidential information within KIUC guidelines.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to positively and effectively engage and influence stakeholders at all levels within the organization.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from Board of Directors, Senior Staff, employees, customers, vendors, contractors, governmental agencies, and the public.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to works with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference.
  • Ability to apply complex mathematical concepts related to Accounting and Finance.
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instruction in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Ability to define problems, collect and analyze data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Work is performed in an office environment and requires the ability to: frequently remain in a stationary position to operate a computer, to analyze data, and/or to participate in meetings; frequently perform repetitive movements/motions to operate standard office equipment and/or keyboards; frequently moves about inside the multi-story office - occasionally ascending/descending stairs - to access files, to utilize office machinery, and/or to attend meetings; constantly positions self to maintain physical files and access office/supplies/equipment.
  • The ability to frequently communication information and ideas so others will understand; must be able to exchange information accurately both in person and over the phone.
  • The ability to frequently perform activities requiring close visual acuity to prepare and analyze documents and spreadsheets; view items on a computer monitor; perform extensive reading; etc.
  • The position frequently required distance vision, depth perception, color vision, and the ability to adjust visual focus to ascend/descend stairs; traverse on different - possibly uneven - flooring surfaces, especially if required to go outside an office environment; and to safely drive a vehicle for business purposes.
  • This position occasionally requires the ability to bend/crouch to move, transport and/or position parcels, packages, boxes, and/or other items within, as well as outside, the office environment weighing up to 45 pounds.
  • Frequently exposed to noise, dust, light, and temperatures normal for an indoor office environment; occasionally exposed to noise, dust, light, and temperatures normal for an outdoor/commercial work environment when required to leave the office environment.
  • This position occasionally requires the ability to work longer than a normal work week and/or to travel on- and off-island to attend training, to serve as a representative of KIUC, or for other business purposes.
Perform basic accounting procedures and financial analysis for the Department to include budgets, forecasts, and various analysis and models. Prepares timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports including, but not limited to, variance analysis and account reconciliations. Works closely with other departments to produce results in efficiencies, strategic projects, and financial goals for the Cooperative and its members.
