Qualifications:
Associate degree or higher related to Interpreting or the field of Deafness is preferred
Certificate in interpreting issued by either the Board of Educational Interpreters or the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf
Minimum Level I/Basic Certification
Ability to maintain effective working relationships with others
Experience working in an educational setting preferred.
Primary Purpose:
Interpret instructional delivery as required by ARD schedule of services for deaf and hard of hearing students in classroom settings. Also, interpret school announcements, school assemblies/pep rallies, and special events, and provide assistance during emergency drills and procedures. Interpret, for UIL and Extracurricular Activities and ARDs, as needed. Interpret for deaf and hard of hearing staff for staff meetings, parent conferences, trainings, and workshops. Interpret any other areas where communication translation is needed for students.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Interpret and/or transliterate expressively and receptively according to the specifications of the student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP)
- Knowledge of the role of the interpreter and BEI/RID Code of Professional Conduct
- Participate and interpret in planned in-service and professional growth activities.
- Have knowledge of language development in DHH students Interpret for staff as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned by campus administration.
- Have an awareness of a variety of sign systems and translanguaging strategies used for DHH individuals.
- Provide sight translation of materials, assessments, and follow standardized testing guidelines and training protocols.
- Provide in-class support according to the specifications of the student’s IEP (i.e. language clarification, tutorials in class, signed/oral administration) or as requested by the teacher in the classroom.
- Participate in continuing professional growth as required by the certification governing body (Board of Evaluation of Interpreters- BEI). Provide evidence of documentation to maintain certifications and CEU’s upon request in a timely manner to maintain certification status.

Working Conditions
Maintain emotional control under stress. Prolonged standing or sitting. Repetitive hand motions due to signing. Moderate stooping, bending, and lifting.
