Summary
The Pre-Apprentice Lineman is an entry level labor position that participates in a structured, on-the-job training program to prepare for the BPU Apprentice Lineman program. The structured training program will provide on-the-job training to apply safe work practices and complete established competencies while working with overhead and underground line construction/ maintenance crews and labor crews. This position will work in all types of weather conditions and perform work in various locations such as, at heights up to 90 feet, climbing wood poles, underground vaults and/or confined spaces.

Duties and Responsibilities
- Drives truck to job site and may operate winch and power take off unit as directed. May tow equipment such as air compressors, material trailers, and backhoe trailers, etc. *
- Work from elevated and awkward positions. Ascend and descend wood poles, towers and other electrical structures as required. *
- Performs miscellaneous groundwork such as digging holes, setting poles, installing anchors, splicing dead wires, carrying material and equipment, loading and unloading poles and other labor work as assigned. *
- May work alone in assembling and disassembling minor items on crossarms and secondary racks such as insulators, pins, braces and bolts when performing work with the Lineman and/or Apprentice Lineman to whom they have been assigned. *
- Assist Lineman in the performance of his/her work when framing poles, assembling and disassembling material such as guys, wire, transformers, switches, cutouts, lightning arresters, capacitor banks, streetlights and traffic signals. *
- Uses and takes care of ropes and lines in providing Lineman with tools and equipment needed to perform their work. *
- Works on utility crews installing cable, conduit, transformer pads, pedestals and assists the carpenters in setting concrete forms by tying steel and any other work associated with construction such as using concrete saw, jackhammer, power spade, chippers, tampers, ditch pumps and similar types of equipment when needed. *
- Performs all general semi-skilled work in the construction, repair and maintenance of conduit, manholes, vaults, streetlights, traffic signals and other underground installations, including cable pulling, steel work, concrete work, installing duct banks and cutting concrete from around energized cables. *
- Will be required to assist radio dispatcher in Trouble Department. *
- Helps put out flags, cones and warning signs as required to make job site safe. *
- Work safely while obtaining competencies necessary to enter an apprenticeship. *
- Respond to 24hr call in overtime. *
- Perform other position related duties as needed.
- Denotes essential function
Education / Experience:
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Completion of a recognized Lineman climbing school is preferred.
- Valid driver’s license with a demonstrated safe driving record
- Class A CDL is preferred. If Class A CDL is not valid at start date, must possess and maintain a valid CDL within 3 months of start date
- Ability to read, write and follow written and/or verbal instructions
- Basic/Intermediate math skills
- Must be able to pass a human performance evaluation which includes lifting over 50 pounds
- Must pass a climbing test to physically qualify for the position
- Must provide required line workers tool/equipment (list provided at request) at own expense by start date
- Complete Pre-Apprentice Lineman training program within 18 months of hire date.
- Must pass aptitude test and human performance evaluations approved by Human Resources Division
