Position Overview
The Field Technician is a hands-on role responsible for implementing habitat and land management projects across a variety of landscapes. This position works directly with the Implementation Manager at the Byron, Minnesota location and field team to execute high-quality ecological restoration, vegetation management, and property improvement projects.
This is a physically demanding, outdoor position suited for individuals who enjoy working in diverse conditions and contributing to meaningful conservation outcomes. Field Technicians are essential to executing restoration plans including invasive species control, planting, equipment operation, and general land management activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Implement habitat and land management projects including:
- Native seeding, planting, and habitat installation
- Invasive species control (mechanical and chemical methods)
- Brush cutting, forestry work, and tree removal
- Erosion control and site stabilization
- Apply herbicides in accordance with regulations and safety standards
- Operate and maintain equipment such as:
- Tractors, skid steers, ATVs/UTVs
- Chainsaws, brush cutters, sprayers, and hand tools
- Assist with prescribed burns and firebreak preparation (when applicable)
- Read maps, plans, and GPS data to accurately execute projects
- Maintain daily work logs, herbicide records, and project documentation
- Perform routine maintenance on tools, vehicles, and equipment
- Work independently or with a crew to complete projects efficiently
- Travel to job sites across Minnesota and surrounding states as needed
- Follow all safety protocols and contribute to a safety-first culture
- All other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and terrains
- Ability to lift 50 lbs and perform physically demanding labor
- Strong work ethic, reliability, and attention to detail
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Basic mechanical aptitude and equipment operation skills
- Willingness to travel and work extended hours during peak seasons
Preferred Qualifications
- Class A CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) or ability to obtain
- Commercial Pesticide Applicator License (or ability to obtain within 60 days)
- Experience in:
- Habitat restoration, forestry, landscaping, or agriculture
- Equipment operation (tractors, skid steers, trailers)
- Herbicide application and invasive species management
- Knowledge of native and invasive plant identification
- Prescribed burn training (e.g., S-130/S-190)
- First Aid/CPR certification
- OSHA 10 or 30 certification
- Degree or coursework in:
- Ecology, Natural Resources, Wildlife Management, or related field
Work Environment & Expectations
- Outdoor fieldwork in varying weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, snow)
- Work on uneven, rugged, or remote terrain
- Seasonal workload fluctuations with potential overtime
- Travel may be required depending on project location
- Early mornings and long days during peak seasons
