Essential Job Responsibilities:
1. Perform calibrations and troubleshoot all plant instrumentation and systems.
2. Troubleshoot and repair plant instrumentation and PLC (instrument circuits) to
resolution with no oversite: having a sound theory of the mode of failure before
replacement equipment is installed.
3. Obtain ordering data for parts: researching to determine replacement parts or
equipment.
4. Research through the web, manuals, vendor calls, or other methods for troubleshooting and repairs.
5. Perform archiving and retrieval of documentation.
6. Read and understand the plant procedures pertaining to the Instrument Technician position and apply these procedures to daily work activities.
7. Mark up prints, procedures, calibration documents, or other documents with corrections and submit for revision.
8. Complete and maintain all training required for the Instrument Technician position, by Kalsec’s provision.
9. Interface with the plant’s CMMS system. This includes, but is not limited to, finding work orders, procedures or other documents related to the performance of the Instrument Technician position.
10. Correctly utilize test equipment to troubleshoot, repair, or calibrate plant equipment.
11. Communicate with all departments to aid in scheduling, troubleshooting and repair of plant equipment.
12. Apply Quality Assurance and Food Defense policies to all aspects of the Instrument Technician position.
13. Apply all MIOSHA, and Kalsec Inc. safety rules/regulations to every task performed.
14. Demonstrate leadership and ownership in safety, plant systems, and instrumentation.
15. Perform duties to a high standard of excellence, not settling for a minimum quality of work.
16. Ability to autonomously perform all instrument related work including but not limited to:

  • Any instrument related equipment at 120VAC or less
  • Removal and installation of elements from lines and systems.
  • Perform troubleshooting, repairs, shooting loops, and instrument check outs in support of Engineering projects.
  • Perform troubleshooting and repair of safety interlock circuits and alarm circuits including audible and visual alarms.
  • Perform pneumatic line modifications to and from equipment related to instruments
  • Using Computer based controls such as HMI’s, PLC’s, etc. to calibrate, test, and troubleshoot instrumentation and instrument circuits
  • Replacement of flexible connections, fittings, and terminations (conduit,
cables, etc.) to instruments and related equipment that are general purpose or intrinsically safe
  • Perform all installations, replacements, calibrations, and maintenance of instrumentation to include but not limited to:
o PH/ORP systems to include replacement of transmitters and PH elements
o Fixed and portable gas monitoring systems
o Temperature devices including but not limited to:
 Indicators
 Transmitters
 Switches
 Controllers (except for direct motor-controlled devices)
  • Pressure devices including but not limited to:
 Indicators
 Transmitters (e.g., DP, Flow, Level, etc.)
 Switches
 Process controllers (except for direct motor-controlled devices)
  • Level devices including but not limited to:
o Radar
o Ultrasonic
o Displacement
o Differential Pressure
o Point Level
o Switches
o Transmitters
  • Flow devices including but not limited to:
o Coriolis
o Magnetic Flow
o Vortex Flow
o Thermal Flow
o Switches
o Transmitters
  • Flow to totalizers including but not limited to:
o Mechanical flow meters (e.g., LC, Veeder Root, Neptune, GPI, etc.)
o Replacement, repair, and calibration from the inline elements through the pre-set, totalizer, and any auxiliary switching to operate controls attached to the meter
  • Weighing Systems including but not limited to:
o Floor Scales
o Benchtop Scales
o Lab Scales
o Tank Scales
  • Valves, Actuators, Valve Pack Solenoids, Converters (voltage, current, pneumatic, etc.), Transducers
Education/Experience:
Required:
  • ISA Certified Control System Technician (CSST) Level I or Completion of a Certified Instrumentation Apprenticeship or equivalent. If a certification in instrumentation is not possessed when the position is awarded then the instrument technician will obtain, by Kalsec’s provision, a Level I CSST certification through ISA within 1 year of obtaining the position.
  • If a certification in instrumentation is not possessed when the position is
awarded then the instrument technician will obtain, by Kalsec’s provision, a
Level I CSST certification through ISA within 1 year of obtaining the position.
  • Experience with calibration and calibration best practices.
  • Instrumentation experience, including but not limited to, transmitters, switches,
indicators, gauges, PH, guided wave radar, sonar, and PLC interfacing.
  • Well versed in instrumentation test equipment.
  • Have a good understanding of the physical properties of flow, level,
temperature, and pressure, and how these properties interact and affect
instrumentation and processes.
  • Experience in and the understanding of troubleshooting best practices for
manufacturing systems and equipment.
  • Must be able to read P&ID’s, electrical diagrams/drawings, schematics, loop
drawings, and electrical schedules.

Desired:
  • Five (5) years of calibration experience.
  • Five (5) years of troubleshooting instrumentation and process control systems.
  • Well versed in good documentation recording practices.
  • Background in CMMS systems and their function in the plant.
  • Experience with hazardous classified locations, and Intrinsically Safe requirements
as it applies to instrumentation.
  • Basic understanding of the requirements of Arc Flash.
  • Basic understanding of Process Safety Management (PSM).
  • Background in Quality Assurance, Food Defense, and Safe Quality Foods.
  • Well versed in the requirements of OSHA and MIOSHA as they apply to the
Instrument Technician position. This includes Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO).
  • Well versed in computer software, MS Office, and MS Outlook.
Equipment Operation:
  • Ability to work at computer/desk station utilizing all necessary software based applications required for job responsibilities.
  • Working knowledge of the activities and responsibilities of job expectations and work performed across all Finishing operations.
Physical Requirements:
  • Access all areas of manufacturing
  • Work occasionally with heat, noise, odors, heights, confined spaces, outdoor weather conditions.
  • Ability to wear PAPR Power Air Purifying Respirator
  • Able to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Frequently and for extended periods of time, sit, stand, reach, kneel, bend over, or climb ladders.
  • Qualify to enter confined spaces per the Kalsec Inc. Confined Space program.

  • Ability to travel as needed
