Job Description
Review clinical documentation and diagnosis results as appropriate to extract data and apply appropriate ICD-9-CM and CPT4 codes for billing, internal and external reporting, research and regulatory compliance. Under the Direction of Health Information Management (HIM) or supervisor of HIM, accurately code inpatient and outpatient (for example, diagnostic, therapeutic, emergency department services, ambulatory surgery, observation service and behavioral health encounters) conditions and procedures as documented in the ICD-9-CM Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting. Resolve error reports associated with billing processes, identify and report error patterns, and, when necessary, assist in design and implementation of workflow changes to reduce billing errors.
Education And Credentials
Associate’s degree from an accredited institution or have obtained education through an accredited agency (i.e. AHIMA/AAPC). RHIT/CCS/CPC or equivalent certification by an accredited institution (i.e. AHIMA/AAPC) required. Have also obtained a specialized outpatient certification* (i.e. Certified Emergency Department Coder CEDC) *If specialized certification is obtained while on the job the coder must be performing the specialty as their main job function and have gotten prior approval from the Lead Coder or Director/Manager of HIM.*
Experience
Three (3) years of progressive on-the-job experience required. Must understand confidentiality and be able to operate in a PC in a network environment. Knowledge of anatomy and physiology, basic knowledge of medical terminology, disease states/processes and pharmaceuticals required. Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
