GENERAL SUMMARY
The purpose of this job is to advise veterans and their dependents and/or survivors in obtaining educational, financial, and social services, and other benefits. Interviews dependents and/or survivors to determine eligibility. Maintains and updates records and case files. Maintains individual accreditation as required by law. Participates in public outreach and engagement. Conducts research and interprets laws.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assists Veterans in the completion of applications for pensions, compensation, burial allowances, healthcare, and other necessary forms and applications.
- Interviews dependents and/or survivors to determine eligibility for VA benefits and services.
- Maintains current knowledge regarding changes in regulations and legislation to properly advise Veterans and their dependents regarding benefits and services available.
- Conducts initial interview to determine eligibility for County Emergency Relief Fund and Michigan Veterans Trust Fund; ensures proper documentation is obtained and application and purchase order is completed and submitted.
- Maintains and updates records, case files, and other materials for review and/or referral.
- Participates in community events to inform the public of services rendered, rights, and benefits of Veterans and their dependents; conducts outreach to increase accessibility to underserved populations.
- Advises Veterans, their dependents, and/or survivors in obtaining educational, financial, and social services and other benefits outside of the VA.
- Performs related work as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Required Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Human Services or a related field
- 1 to 3 years of related work experience performing complex customer service tasks
- Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities
Required Licenses or Certifications
- Must obtain accreditation with the Office of General Counsel for the Department of Veterans Affairs within 6 months of hire.
